The Louisiana digital native is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#fa0e8d\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/danikiyoko\">constantly trawling SoundCloud<\/a> for new music to share with a following just shy of 10,000, reposting roughly 50 tracks a day. As a recording artist, they\u2019re only slightly less prolific: In 2024 alone, they\u2019ve dropped two albums, three EPs, and dozens of loosies, leaping between styles without looking down. They\u2019ve started and outgrown a 2000s trap remix trend, created their own potent strain of plugg, and, more recently, launched a new style boldly coined \u201cparty music,\u201d all before reaching drinking age.<\/p>\n<p>            Kiyoko has been making music since they were nine. Growing up, Kiyoko and their mother would ride from their home in Kennedy Heights, on the West Bank of the Mississippi, into New Orleans \u2014 the Hollywood of the Gulf South \u2014 for her jobs as an extra and stunt double. \u201cSmall stunts, like driving,\u201d Kiyoko clarifies on a video call from their dark bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>            Kiyoko was born at the tail end of the city\u2019s Cash Money\/No Limit golden era, heralded by the dissolution of the Hot Boys and the death of Soulja Slim. Kiyoko\u2019s uncle was a bounce rapper, but they felt no compulsion to follow in his footsteps. \u201cIt was one of those things where you hear it so much, you wanna try something different,\u201d they tell me.<\/p>\n<p>            Ultimately, it was the old-souled Brooklyn crew Pro Era that first drew Kiyoko into the rap <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. \u201cI was listening to boom bap,\u201d they say, \u201cand then a friend put me onto A$AP Rocky and Kendrick.\u201d Wayne had always been in rotation by default, but Young Thug, who ran with Cash Money in those days, soon took front and center.<\/p>\n<p>            In 2015, upon the creation of their first SoundCloud account, Kiyoko\u2019s rap education began in earnest. \u201cI would scroll through people\u2019s follows for hours \u2014 picking this person out, picking that person out, like, \u2018Okay, I wanna send them beats,\u2019\u201d they say. \u201cThat\u2019s how I did it for like three years straight, and I didn\u2019t get a single listen. Despite largely abandoning the Gucci Mane-indebted (and often Gucci Mane-sampling) late-aughts trap flips that populate Kiyoko\u2019s <i>Streetrunnaz<\/i> tapes, they added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> in February before dropping a syrupy tape of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#fa0e8d\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/danikiyoko\/sets\/everything-vamp-plugg\">vamp plugg<\/a> variety two weeks later. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI really don\u2019t like doing the things other people are doing, so I decided to turn something totally different around,\u2019\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>            Their three most recent projects \u2014 March\u2019s <i>Welcome To The Party<\/i> and its two follow-up EPs, May\u2019s <i>#SutetchiX<\/i> and last week\u2019s <i>Shifuku<\/i> \u2014 all belong to the blown-out, hyper-saturated party music sound Kiyoko co-created with their favorite collaborator, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#fa0e8d\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/thechemist3\">chemsblood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cMe and chem both love that era of 2010s music where people were doing literally anything different, anything outrageous, outlandish,\u201d Kiyoko says. \u201cThat era of music was the most fun for me, so I try to take elements from that time period and throw them into a more updated version in my own style.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            These artists include Ke$ha, Soulja Boy, Chief Keef, and Rae Sremmurd, but there are also other, darker sounds bouncing around in Kiyoko\u2019s head at any given moment. Late in our interview, they out themselves as a diehard Korn fan, offhandedly introducing me to their own nu-metal outfit, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#fa0e8d\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/ver-misst\">Vermisst<\/a>. She was diagnosed with lupus and lost her job in 2020 but \u201cturned her sickness into a business and a way to advocate for other people with chronic illnesses.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            Kiyoko\u2019s father left when they were young, and they have no siblings, but family is essential to their artistic philosophy. They call chemsblood \u201cthe freaking brother [they] never had,\u201d and chem tells me over Instagram DM that he\u2019s in awe of both Kiyoko\u2019s \u201cadaptability to any sound\u201d and the genuine care they have for the people around them. They originally devised it as a New Orleans collective but found the scene unreceptive to their vision. \u201cThat\u2019s all I can really say about this city as a whole \u2014 it\u2019s very close minded,\u201d they tell me.<\/p>\n<p>            Kiyoko did bring one local rapper, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#fa0e8d\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/drezzo369\">drezzo<\/a>, into the fold, but the rest of the roster hails from elsewhere. \u201cIt\u2019s a bunch of internet friends who I knew could really mesh with the style and sound I wanted to go for,\u201d Kiyoko explains. There are moments in our conversation when they become suddenly, intensely serious, discussing their motivations and dreams for the future. Mostly, though, they\u2019ve got the lighthearted, nimble attitude that becomes an early-20s artist. As they find their footing on a career path that\u2019s less certain than ever before, their ability to change direction with no clear terrain ahead will be essential.<\/p>\n<p>            There\u2019s almost no light in Kiyoko\u2019s room while we talk \u2014 they had the TV on earlier but turned it off for our interview, they tell me \u2014 even as the hour approaches noon in Louisiana.
