Both her parents worked extremely hard to provide for her, but money was tight and the family was often in \u201csurvival mode,\u201d meaning her dance lessons eventually became too expensive.<\/p>\n<p>But her father recognized that there was something special about the way she danced, tackling complex footwork and hyper-precise choreography with a natural grace and seamless fluidity. As a big hip-hop fan who always played A Tribe Called Quest and Lauryn Hill, he was also familiar with breaking, which is why he\u2019d take the 7-year-old prodigy to freestyle jams run by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/intellectdiscover.com\/content\/journals\/10.1386\/ghhs_00074_1\">the local Pinoy b-boy scene<\/a>. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263187\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"B-Girl Logistx&#039;s BEST moments | 10 YEARS of Red Bull BC One All Stars\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fyowahUNATM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263156\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Edra essentially grew up at these jams, working with veteran dancers to perfect her head spins, freezes, and coin drops, while slowly building up her reputation as \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/intellectdiscover.com\/content\/journals\/10.1386\/ghhs_00074_1\">the face of Filipino breaking<\/a>.\u201d And jams kept her busy so she wouldn\u2019t \u201cget into trouble when shit started h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening at home,\u201d like her mother leaving when Edra was just 10.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cIt was hard,\u201d Edra says, adding that she was encouraged to keep busy with hardcore workouts and near-constant training. But the \u201cimmense pressure\u201d would sometimes leave her feeling \u201crobotic,\u201d denying her the \u201cspiritual release\u201d she craves and draining her of the \u201csoulfulness\u201d that defines her dance style. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cIt got intense really fast,\u201d she recalls, though she cringes when likening it to \u201cputting a Band-Aid on that trauma.\u201d I nod along, listening to Edra vent about her father never allowing her to do anything except train and practice, which she was able to use to her advantage by joining her first crew at 15.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI was just going through it,\u201d she says \u2013 though that pressure just made her \u201cwant to dance even more.\u201d Despite being the youngest by far, Edra felt like she\u2019d finally found a circle of friends that she describes as \u201chealthy brothers and sisters who were always supporting me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThen, it got to a point where I was just like, \u2018Yo, I can&#8217;t be here, I can&#8217;t be home, like, I gotta go,\u2019\u201d she says. She needed to \u201crestart and heal.\u201d She felt lost, scared of the future, struggling with complicated feelings towards dance. Unsurprisingly, she\u2019s used it plenty of times to impress judges at major international events, like Singapore\u2019s 7ToSmoke Radikal Forze Jam and the prestigious Red Bull BC One B-Girl championship, where she took home the title in 2021.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263175\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Unless directly questioned though, Edra never brings up her long list of awards and accolades, preferring to talk about how breaking makes her feel. Much more than just a sport, Edra believes breaking is a form of deep spiritual and artistic expression, requiring a combination of dedicated practice, creative improvisation, and intuitive movement that gets into a flow state. <\/p>\n<p>            When she\u2019s in that mindset, it becomes easy to connect with the rhythms of both Wu-Tang Clan classics, a scrappy Soundcloud mix with \u201ca little groovy soulfulness,\u201d and a few \u201cbig power moves\u201d for good measure. She grows increasingly excited when rattling off a list of her most \u201cdynamic\u201d moves: her favorite flips, the arched back freezes, and sky-high flash kicks. It\u2019s a foundational pillar of hip-hop, and is still primarily associated with low-income Black and brown troublemakers (and Channing Tatum in Step Up) in the cultural consciousness. <\/p>\n<p>            Breaking emerged as a pop cultural phenomenon in the early \u201880s with the help of Rock Steady Crew, a group of second-generation b-boys whose members included famed dancers like Crazy Legs, Ken Swift, and Mr. Freeze. After appearing in major motion pictures like Flashdance, Beat Street, and Wild Style, the crew also produced a global hit called &#8220;(Hey You) The Rock Steady Crew,\u201d catching <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/82457469\/Global_Breakdancing_and_the_Intercultural_Body\">international attention<\/a> with their acrobatic prowess and imposing \u201cpower moves.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263179\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Breaking was invented by Black and Puerto Rican crews from the South Bronx during the \u201870s, according to Jonathan Abrams, a <i>New York Times<\/i> culture reporter and the author of <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/605156\/the-come-up-by-jonathan-abrams\/\">The Come Up: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop<\/a><\/i>. Alongside emceeing and graffiti, breaking is considered one of the \u201cfour pillars of hip-hop.\u201d Granted, it\u2019s most closely associated with the pillar of turntablism, with Abrams pinpointing Kool Herc\u2019s \u201cdiscovery of \u2018breaks\u2019\u201d and breakbeats as a foundational moment in hip-hop history.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cEverybody used to wait for these breaks,\u201d Abrams explains, referring to the percussive funk interludes that were \u201conly a few seconds long.\u201d But when Herc and other turntablists like Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash found a way to \u201cstretch out\u201d these instrumental sections into breakbeats, it meant people were finally able to \u201cactually get down\u201d and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/ev3v4z\/exploring-the-birth-of-the-b-boy-in-70s-new-york\">local gang could settle disputes<\/a> in a non-violent way via cypher dance battles. In the eyes of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, breaking\u2019s presence at the 2024 Olympics could appeal to a younger audience, bored by a 128-year-old event typically associated with elitist tradition and ceremonial formality. <\/p>\n<p>            That said, the IOC\u2019s decision has been rubbing old-school athletes and narrow-minded fans <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/12\/10\/sports\/breakdancing-olympics-seems-like-bad-step\/\">the wrong way<\/a>, with some going so far as to brand its inclusion in the Games a \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2020\/dec\/08\/olympics-branded-a-mockery-after-inclusion-of-breakdancing-for-paris-games\">mockery<\/a>\u201d and something that \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.piquenewsmagazine.com\/piquen-yer-interest\/opinion-should-breakdancing-really-be-an-olympic-sport-4192571\">just doesn\u2019t seem to fit<\/a>\u201d with the rest of the Olympic Games. But when I was breaking, the whole aspect of doing stuff with my body \u2014 the type of freedom, really connecting to drums and music \u2014 was different for me,\u201d Swift said. \u201cA lot of people act like I\u2019m a hater, but they\u2019re wrong. Beyond the gold, she cares about showing aspiring dancers that they can be just as good as the boys in what\u2019s primarily a male-dominated field. But while the frequent use of \u201csexual burns\u201d and harassment can make things \u201cmore intimidating,\u201d Edra says that breaking is far from the only place where sexism and misogyny occur. <\/p>\n<p>            Even as one of the best breakers in the world, there will be times when you have to bite your tongue, she warns. Luckily, there\u2019s a growing group of strong b-girls who don\u2019t have any qualms about making themselves visible, both within the Olympics and the breaking scene itself.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263183\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cJust to be a breaker is not easy, and to be a young female in it is even harder,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I think every time I have a difficulty, I have to keep working.
