Meanwhile, an AI-powered robot from Google DeepMind has achieved \u201camateur human level performance\u201d in the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a study published in an <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2408.03906\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arxiv paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this week, the Google artificial intelligence subsidiary outlined how the robot functions, along with footage of it taking on what we can only assume were willing enthusiastic ping pong players of varying skill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to DeepMind, the racket-wielding robot had to be good at low-level skills, like returning the ball, as well as more complex tasks, like long-term planning and strategising. It also played against opponents with diverse styles, drawing on vast amounts of data to refine and adapt its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_Olympic_level_quite_yet\"><\/span>Not Olympic level quite yet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The robotic arm \u2014 and its 3D-printed racket \u2014 won 13 out of 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s against human opponents with different levels of skill in the game. It won 100% of matches against \u201cbeginner\u201d and 55% against \u201cinter<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te\u201d players. The sport requires hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking, speed, and adaptability, among other things, making it well suited to train and test these skills in AI-powered robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world\u2019s \u201cfirst robot table tennis tutor\u201d was acknowledged in 2017 by Guinness World Records in 2017. The rather imposing machine was developed by Japanese electronics company OMRON. Its latest iteration is the FORPHEUS (stands for \u201cFuture OMRON Robotics <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> for Exploring Possibility of Harmonized aUtomation with Sinic theoretics,\u201d and is also inspired by the ancient mythological figure Orpheus\u2026).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OMRON says it \u201cembodies the relationship that will exist between humans and technology in the future.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google DeepMind makes no such existential claims for its recent ping pong champion, but the findings from its development may still prove profound for our robot friends down the line.
