\n South African pharmacy chain Clicks closed its stores Wednesday after a racist advertisement on its website sparked violent protests.<\/p>\n

Clicks made the decision amid outrage over the ad for shampoo brand TRESemm\u00e9, which labeled images of black women\u2019s hair \u201cfrizzy & dull\u201d while describing white women\u2019s hair as \u201cfine & flat\u201d and \u201cnormal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clicks apologized for running the ad and removed it from its website after it was posted on Friday. The chain said an unnamed senior executive responsible for the ordeal had resigned and all employees involved in publishing the ad had been suspended.<\/p>\n

But the ad nevertheless led to an online backlash and demonstrations that damaged seven Clicks stores on Monday. One shop in the municipality of Emalahleni was hit with a petrol bomb that caught a shopping cart on fire, according to local news<\/a> outlet TimesLive.<\/p>\n

The protesters were led by the Economic Freedom Fighters, a far-left political party that called on the chain to shutter its stores for at least a week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite people insult us and then they apologize, they think that\u2019s the end,\u201d said Julius Malema, the party\u2019s leader. \u201cWe are no longer going to accept any apology which is not accompanied by justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clicks initially resisted calls to close stores on Monday, according to a statement on its Twitter<\/a> account. But CEO Vikesh Ramsunder said the company would \u201cprovide counseling and support\u201d to its store staffers during Wednesday\u2019s daylong closure.<\/p>\n

The chain also pledged to replace all TRESemm\u00e9 products with \u201clocally sourced haircare brands\u201d on its store shelves. The Unilever-owned brand issued its own apology and acknowledged that the ad \u201cpromoted racist stereotypes about hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe campaign set out to celebrate the beauty of all hair types and the range of solutions that TRESemm\u00e9 offers, but we got it wrong,\u201d TRESemm\u00e9 said in a statement posted to its website. \u201cThe images are not in line with the values of our brand, or of Clicks.\u201d<\/p>\n
