Or is it simply the next step in the evolution of creative collaboration?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s explore.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-ai-creates-content\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_AI_creates_content\"><\/span>How AI creates content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at how AI generates content to set the foundation for this discussion.<\/p>\n<p>AI generates text using machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP) and natural language generation (NLG).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-machine-learning\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Machine_learning\"><\/span>Machine learning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>ML is a subset of artificial intelligence that involves training models to recognize patterns and make data-based decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the foundation that makes NLP and NLG possible. The process goes something like this:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Massive datasets consisting of text from books, articles, websites and more are collected.<\/li>\n<li>ML models are trained on these datasets.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The models learn linguistic patterns, context, grammar and structure when analyzing the data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Models can improve over time without being explicitly programmed for specific tasks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-natural-language-processing\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Natural_language_processing\"><\/span>Natural language processing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NLP comes into play by understanding and processing human language. NLP does things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breaking down text into smaller units like words or phrases.<\/li>\n<li>Analyzing the grammatical structure of sentences.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying and classifying entities like names, dates and locations in text.<\/li>\n<li>Determining the emotional tone of text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-natural-language-generation\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Natural_language_generation\"><\/span>Natural language generation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NLG involves generating the text, using the patterns and structures learned during the ML training phase.<\/p>\n<p>NLG includes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deciding what information to include in the generated text.<\/li>\n<li>Organizing the content into a logical sequence.<\/li>\n<li>Combining information into coherent sentences.<\/li>\n<li>Converting the structured content into grammatically correct sentences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a nutshell, ML models take pre-existing data, analyze it and generate new text based on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-plagiarism\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_plagiarism\"><\/span>What is plagiarism?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Plagiarism is traditionally defined as using someone else\u2019s work, ideas or expressions without proper acknowledgment and presenting them as your own.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It can involve copying text verbatim, paraphrasing too closely without credit or even using someone\u2019s ideas or theories without proper attribution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Originality plays a part in evaluating plagiarism. Original work refers to content created through one\u2019s own thoughts, analysis and synthesis of information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Technically, when you use an AI tool to create content, you are relying on AI\u2019s analysis of data\u2014data that was fed to it from <em>others\u2019<\/em> original work.<\/p>\n<p>This sounds a lot like plagiarism. But it\u2019s not so black and white.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-content-is-trained-on-other-s-ideas-and-likeness\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_content_is_trained_on_others_ideas_and_likeness\"><\/span>AI content is trained on other\u2019s ideas and likeness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI content is trained on massive data sets. In other words, other people\u2019s ideas.<\/p>\n<p>In theory, though, when AI generates text, the text is generated dynamically and is not a direct copy of any specific text from the training data.<\/p>\n<p>So, in this sense, AI-generated text can be considered original because it\u2019s newly created each time you prompt it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, this is not foolproof. <\/p>\n<p>In some cases, AI-generated content can get eerily close to copying ideas and sentences in a way that feels like plagiarism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, AI tools can also be trained on specific writing styles or likenesses of people, attempting to copy how others put together words and ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, is AI stealing ideas? By some accounts, yes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, one author, Jodie Cook,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-pro-files\/ai-is-stealing-your-content-steal-it-back-9c7312f6cf85\"> said <\/a>ChatGPT used \u201cmultiple exact sentences\u201d from an original article she\u2019d published online when she prompted it to write about entrepreneurialism for kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fact that there are multiple lawsuits against OpenAI for copyright infringement suggests that Cook is not alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-newspapers-sue-openai-copyright-infringement-over-ai-training-2024-04-30\/\">group of newspapers<\/a> and<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2023\/sep\/20\/authors-lawsuit-openai-george-rr-martin-john-grisham\"> authors<\/a> are among those filing suit against OpenAI for their work being used to train AI models.<\/p>\n<p>So far, in at least one case, OpenAI has seen <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/openai-gets-partial-win-authors-us-copyright-lawsuit-2024-02-13\/\">rulings in its favor.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There have also been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/virginieberger\/2024\/05\/30\/ais-data-debacle-when-training-becomes-stealing\/\">more troubles for AI<\/a>. One example is Sony, which wants companies to stop using Sony music and lyrics to train AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s actress Scarlett Johansson, who opposed AI\u2019s use of her likeness to create a copy of her voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All of this is to say that <em>everyone<\/em> is trying to figure out the ethical use of AI and the question of plagiarism.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-haven-t-content-creators-been-borrowing-ideas-forever\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Havent_content_creators_been_borrowing_ideas_forever\"><\/span>Haven\u2019t content creators been borrowing ideas forever?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Content creators have always drawn inspiration from other\u2019s work. Even the world\u2019s most popular authors have literary influences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the online realm, it\u2019s not uncommon for content creators to use search results to research a topic before writing it.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a difference between inspiration and plagiarism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Skilled content creators will research and synthesize information from various sources, adding their own analysis and providing citations.<\/p>\n<p>Even when building on others\u2019 ideas, there is an expectation that new insights or perspectives will emerge. This is what makes original, thought-provoking content.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-problem-of-unoriginal-content-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_problem_of_unoriginal_content\"><\/span>The problem of unoriginal content\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One major problem of AI-generated content that\u2019s published without one\u2019s own expertise is bland, unoriginal content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Is unoriginal content plagiarism? Maybe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re simply using an AI tool that scrapes other\u2019s ideas from the web and stitches them together without adding your thoughts, analysis and style of writing (also known as patchwork or mosaic plagiarism), then it could be plagiarism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it\u2019s generic content. Unhelpful content that adds nothing new to the conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google Search has been battling unoriginal content for many years, and it can only get worse with AI.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if website publishers rely too heavily on AI-generated content for their sites and that AI content ranks in the search results, then some AI tools will simply regurgitate AI\u2019s ideas as they search the web for data on a topic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Author Maggie Harrison Dupr\u00e9 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/ai-trained-ai-generated-data-interview\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhen you feed synthetic content back to a generative AI model, strange things start to h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en. Think of it like data inbreeding, leading to increasingly mangled, bland and all-around bad outputs.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s an unsettling notion indeed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-million-dollar-question-is-using-ai-generated-content-considered-plagiarism\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_million-dollar_question_Is_using_AI-generated_content_considered_plagiarism\"><\/span>The million-dollar question: Is using AI-generated content considered plagiarism?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Turns out, no one has a definitive answer yet. However, many are trying to institute guidelines on the use of AI-generated content.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/artificial-intelligence-guidelines-ap-news-532b417395df6a9e2aed57fd63ad416a\">AP and other publishers are developing guidelines<\/a> on AI, and universities are developing their own policies as well.<\/p>\n<p>If we are left to self-govern our use of AI, the best we can do is rely on our own ethical analysis of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of it has to do with what we <em>do<\/em> with the AI output.<\/p>\n<p>When we rely solely on AI-generated content\u2014without any human involvement and editing\u2014we are stifling creativity and potentially publishing inaccurate information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From a marketing perspective, the question is: Will it distinguish you from the noise?
