It will take about a month to fully roll out. <\/p>\n<p>This update is not just a normal core update. The August 2024 core update takes into account the feedback Google heard since the September 2023 helpful content update that seemed to have a negative impact on many small and independent publishers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Google is saying. <\/strong>John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2024\/08\/august-2024-core-update\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cToday, we launched our August 2024 core update to Google Search. This update is designed to continue our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google said this update aims to promote useful content from small and independent publishers, after Google listened to feedback it received since the release of the March 2024 core update. Mueller added:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThis latest update takes into account the feedback we\u2019ve heard from some creators and others over the past few months. As always, we aim to connect people with a range of high quality sites, including \u2018small\u2019 or \u2018\u201c\u2019independent\u2019 sites that are creating useful, original content on relevant searches. This is an area we\u2019ll continue to address in future updates.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This August 2024 core update \u201caims to better capture improvements that sites may have made, so we can continue to surface the best of the web,\u201d Mueller added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidance updated.<\/strong> Google posted several updates to its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates\/core-updates\">help page about core updates<\/a>, including more in-depth guidance for those who may see changes after an update.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More details. <\/strong>Google told us we should expect a core update soon, after many publishers have become concerned and anxious about the next update.<\/p>\n<p>Since then we have seen a tremendous amount of Google search ranking volatility without a confirmation from Google on a core update or any update of its kind. In fact, this morning, I posted about even more <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-search-ranking-volatility-melting-37909.html\">intense Google Search ranking volatility<\/a> on Search Engine Roundtable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do if you are hit.\u00a0<\/strong>Google has\u00a0given advice\u00a0on what to consider if you are negatively impacted by a core update in the past. Google has not really given much new advice here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There aren\u2019t specific actions to take to recover. A negative rankings impact may not signal anything is wrong with your pages.<\/li>\n<li>Google has offered a list of\u00a0questions to consider if your site is hit by a core update.<\/li>\n<li>Google said you can see a bit of a\u00a0recovery between core updates\u00a0but the biggest change would be after another core update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, write helpful content for people and not to rank in search engines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they\u2019ve been making satisfying content meant for people. For those that might not be ranking as well, we strongly encourage reading our\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/fundamentals\/creating-helpful-content\">creating helpful, reliable, people-first content<\/a>\u00a0help page,\u201d Google said previously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Previous core updates.\u00a0<\/strong>The previous core update \u2013  the\u00a0March 2024 core update \u2013 was the largest core update, according to Google. It started March 5 and\u00a0completed 45 days later on April 19.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a timeline and our coverage of recent core updates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0March 2024 core update\u00a0was on March 5th and ended on\u00a0April 19.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0November 2023 core update\u00a0was on November 2nd and ended on\u00a0November 28.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0October 2023 core update\u00a0was on October 5th and ended on\u00a0October 19<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0August 2023 core update\u00a0was on August 22nd and ended on\u00a0September 7.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0March 2023 core update\u00a0was on March 15th and\u00a0ended on March 28th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other updates.\u00a0<\/strong>We did have a spam update between the last core update and this core update. It was the\u00a0June 2024 spam update\u00a0that started on June 20 and took 7 days to finish rolling out, completing on\u00a0June 27.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong>\u00a0Many sites are hoping, and have been hoping, to see improvements with the last core update ever since the\u00a0September 2023 helpful content update\u00a0rolled out. Most, if not all, of those sites that were hit in September did not see recoveries.
