\n Unmasked straphangers may be kicked out of the subway system by cops \u2014 or face public humiliation from fellow commuters, an MTA bigwig said Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they get on a subway car or when they get on a bus, all of their fellow passengers see them, and people start taking photos, and people start looking at them, and you quickly feel pretty shamed,\u201d Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg said during an interview with WNYC host Brian Lehrer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy message is don\u2019t let that happ<\/a>en to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

A recent MTA survey found nearly one in 10 straphangers in violation of the transit system\u2019s mask requirement. But the MTA has insisted enforcement of its mask requirement should not include arrests or fines.<\/p>\n

Instead, Feinberg said, cops and transit workers will give mask-averse New Yorkers the boot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t have a mask, they\u2019re going to say, \u2018We have a mask for you in the booth, please go to the station booth and get a mask,’\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re an extremely exceedingly rare person who for some reason has decided that, you know, you\u2019re going to buck the rest of society and just not wear a mask,\u201d she said, \u201cwe\u2019re going to tell you to leave the system and to come back when you\u2019re ready to wear a mask.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we have them [in station booths]. If you\u2019re not feeling [like wearing a mask] that day, go home and try again a different day when you\u2019re ready to wear a mask.\u201d<\/p>\n

Feinberg, 42, has previously called for the MTA to \u201cpublicly embarrass\u201d fare evaders.<\/p>\n

One of her first actions as interim transit chief was to publicly name and shame the companies most guilty of blocking city bus lanes.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
