I\u2019ve rounded up seven fixes for the most common SEO debacles I\u2019ve seen so you can salvage your websites and save a little time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-would-google-crawl-a-page-but-not-index-it\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_would_Google_crawl_a_page_but_not_index_it\"><\/span>Why would Google crawl a page but not index it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are several reasons why a page may be crawled but not indexed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Google\u2019s SEO Office Hours in March 2022, John Mueller highlighted some of the common reasons why users may see the error \u201cCrawled \u2013 Currently not indexed,\u201d like:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Error code like a 404 error.<\/li>\n<li>Noindex tag on the page.<\/li>\n<li>Duplicate content.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"rll-youtube-player\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xgmh67PD6p4\" data-id=\"xgmh67PD6p4\" data-query=\"start=856&amp;feature=oembed\" data-alt=\"English Google SEO office-hours from March 4, 2022\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"English Google SEO office-hours from March 4, 2022\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xgmh67PD6p4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mueller later stated another reason:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe crawl something, but by the time we get to indexing, we decide we actually want to get something else from the website instead.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you read between the lines, I interpreted this as Google classifying your content as unhelpful, signaling a quality issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Google\u2019s AI Overview announcement, Google is reducing the crawl budget, so optimizing your crawl budget with quality content is a high priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This ties into what Gary Illyes mentioned on X, where your<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/methode\/status\/1261259179983081473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\"> poor-quality content is replaced with higher-quality content<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Index selection, while it&#8217;s largely about  (RAM\/flash\/disk) space, it&#8217;s tightly tied to quality of content. If we have tons of free space available, we&#8217;re more likely to index cr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ier content. I use the \u201cSplit text to columns\u201d option in Google Sheets. This helps me identify patterns. If there are many pages not listed in the navigation, search engines may not find them because of your site structure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-add-self-referencing-canonical-tags-to-combat-duplicate-content\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Add_self-referencing_canonical_tags_to_combat_duplicate_content\"><\/span>3. Add self-referencing canonical tags to combat duplicate content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The next battle I aim to win is removing any duplicate content in the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Add self-referencing canonical tags to parameter URLs to avoid duplicate content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say this URL was listed in my report for\u00a0 \u201cCrawled \u2013 Currently not indexed\u201d:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The canonical tag should be self-referencing and look like this:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But sometimes, I run into issues where the canonical tag looks like this\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/120313<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See anything missing? The subfolder is missing.<\/p>\n<p>Another challenge I face is when the canonical tag for a parameter URL is listed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use the example above:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And we add a parameter:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313?clientID-12345\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But when you check the canonical tag, it shows the parameter URL:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313?clientID-12345\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You do not want to list your parameter URL as your canonical tag to avoid duplicate content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, if you see this:\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>&lt;link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313?clientID-12345\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to change it to this:\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>&lt;link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annalovesburritos.com\/en\/120313\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-css-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-double-check-your-hreflang-tags-are-correct\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Double-check_your_hreflang_tags_are_correct\"><\/span>5. Double-check your hreflang tags are correct<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another quick win to help get your content crawled and indexed is double-checking your hreflang tags.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to ensure your country and language codes are accurate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019ll also want to check that the content exists in the language it says it does.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve come across hreflang that says it\u2019s in Japanese, but when I actually go to the Japanese web page, it\u2019s written in English.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is considered duplicate content, and Google will likely never index it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-audit-your-xml-sitemap\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Audit_your_XML_sitemap\"><\/span>6. Audit your XML sitemap<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve cleaned up the canonical and hreflang tags, check your XML sitemap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You want to ensure that all the pages listed in your XML sitemap are 200 status pages with self-referencing canonical tags and localized versions listed under the primary version.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you have key money pages, you can create a temporary XML sitemap that focuses only on the pages listed in the \u201cCrawled\u2013Currently not indexed\u201d report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-submit-fixed-urls-to-the-url-inspection-tool-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Submit_fixed_URLs_to_the_URL_inspection_tool\"><\/span>7. Submit fixed URLs to the URL inspection tool\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The final step is manually submitting all your fixed URLs into the URL inspection tool in Google Search Console.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Typically, I\u2019ll choose batches of 10-20 URLs and see how Google treats those.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that just because you did everything right doesn\u2019t mean Google will fix the issue. It becomes a waiting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> for Google to recrawl each URL and determine if it\u2019s better than an existing page.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-helpful-content-is-the-way-to-avoid-the-crawled-currently-not-indexed-error-in-google-search-console\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Helpful_content_is_the_way_to_avoid_the_%E2%80%98Crawled_%E2%80%93_Currently_not_indexed_error_in_Google_Search_Console\"><\/span>Helpful content is the way to avoid the \u2018Crawled \u2013 Currently not indexed\u2019 error in Google Search Console<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it: Google likely is not indexing your content because of quality issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember, just because a page is indexed today does not guarantee it will be indexed tomorrow.
