But UK startup Drift is navigating new territory with a vessel that isn\u2019t hydrogen-powered, but hydrogen-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">producing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drift is developing an autonomous yacht capable of making green hydrogen at sea. It could offer a quicker, more efficient way to produce and transport the fuel, especially in remote regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of our main advantages is that we can service the hard-to-reach places,\u201d Drift\u2019s founder and CEO, Ben Medland, told TNW. \u201cThis is a huge benefit when compared to having a fixed installation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wind pushes the sailboat, spinning a turbine under the hull which directs electricity to an onboard electrolyser. This machine uses an electrical current to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">break down seawater into hydrogen and oxygen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/srrsbwkqwr?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vessels can carry 2-4 tonnes of hydrogen gas per <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>. However, the company is exploring ways to store the hydrogen as liquid, which is much denser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After filling their hydrogen tanks, the boats return to port for unloading and then head back out to sea. They will act like mobile green hydrogen factories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The energy-producing yachts could be used to refuel future hydrogen-powered container ships out at sea, or to deliver hydrogen to offshore tankers or to ports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An algorithm built by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI firm Faculty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> determines the best routes for the yachts to traverse to maximise green hydrogen production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By combining production and distribution into one vehicle \u2014 and negating the need for a grid connection \u2014 the yachts could cut costs, too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Medland, who has a background in systems engineering, stresses that the boats are intended to complement rather than replace larger, centralised plants. He used the analogy of healthcare to explain.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf large hydrogen plants are the hospitals, the Drift boats are the ambulances,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, Drift announced it has secured \u00a34.6mn (\u20ac5.5mn) in a seed funding round led by Octopus Ventures. The startup has also recently bagged a grant from Innovate UK, the UK\u2019s innovation agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drift has already successfully <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/drift.energy\/news\/blog-post-title-one-ejmdp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trialled a scale-down version of its technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
