She\u2019s wr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed in a white bathrobe on a swanky off-white couch, a bit hoarse but enthusiastic to discuss her new record and the goths who shaped it.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263807\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2988571309\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/genevajacuzzi.bandcamp.com\/album\/triple-fire\">Triple Fire by Geneva Jacuzzi<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263806\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Geneva\u2019s musical education began by happenstance when she was 16, living in Encinitas near Lou\u2019s Records, an institution that will celebrate its 45th birthday next year. One day while browsing, she was struck by the cover of a Bauhaus box set. She bought it and was im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely blown away by Peter Murphy &amp; Co.\u2019s piercingly bleak sound.<\/p>\n<p>            If the next two years were an incomplete orientation in the sounds of Geneva\u2019s birth decade, her first months in L.A. were an accelerated course in synth-pop, darkwave, disco, and house. \u201cI started going to clubs alone and meeting people who [introduced me to] the Smiths and the Cure,\u201d she says, \u201cand they would take me to parties where I\u2019d meet some of the most incredible record collectors, who would open the door to Throbbing Gristle and Art Zoyd \u2014 weird art rock and early electronic. I basically got a Matrix download of everything that was good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Geneva gravitated toward the minimal electronic tracks she heard, primarily because she knew they\u2019d be the most accessible for her to emulate. She bought a microKORG and a 4-track recorder and got to work, mastering these tools out of necessity \u2014 she was too broke to afford anything more sophisticated. What she lacked in gear, she more than made up for with wily songcraft and brash, hilarious lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>            She\u2019s come a long way since then, but she still embraces that DIY ethos. She\u2019s taken her enthralling live sets \u2014 spectacles that verge on performance art \u2014 from tiny rooms to established venues like the Lodge Room, where she\u2019s currently planning <i>Triple Fire<\/i>\u2019s garish release show. Her sound has blossomed from the bedroom recordings she started out making into lushly layered productions. Over the years, she moved from 4-track to 8-track to GarageBand to Ableton, but she still does most of her own production alongside a few trusted friends.<\/p>\n<p>            <i>Triple Fire<\/i>, which follows the 2021 reissue of her breakout cult classic (2010\u2019s <i>Lamaze<\/i>), is Geneva Jacuzzi\u2019s first new full-length since 2016\u2019s <i>Technophelia<\/i>. You\u2019re playing much bigger spaces now. What\u2019s the ideal venue for a Geneva Jacuzzi show?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            <b>Geneva JacuzzI:<\/b> Honestly, a museum. I\u2019ve done shows at MOCA, the Broad, and the Getty. In those spaces, you walk in knowing it\u2019s gonna be something arty. The sound is always shitty, but they give you space to play with. You can fill up a whole room and have the audience be part of the show. It\u2019s an immersive experience. When people go to a show at a club, they\u2019re drinking; they wanna party. I love that, too, and I bring an element of celebration. I like to bring the club to the museum, or the museum to the club.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>\u201cArt Is Dangerous\u201d asks the age-old question, \u201cWhat is art?\u201d Its video expands on that commentary with a crazy ensemble cast of artists. How did that come together?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I wanted it to be a celebratory group experience with all the different types of artists I\u2019m friends with: painters, filmmakers, photographers, super-famous friends and not-so-famous friends. I knew I couldn\u2019t get them all in the same room at once because it\u2019s impossible to schedule that many divas, so I\u2019d ask them to come over and swim, and then I\u2019d shoot a few seconds of footage of them for the video. Tell me more about the symbolism in that one.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I have a lot of witchy friends in L.A. who are always drawing tarot cards, and I always get the Hanged Man. There\u2019s a lot of beauty to that card \u2014 the suspension in limbo, not knowing what to do. It\u2019s a moment of self-reflection.<\/p>\n<p>            The lyrics for that one\u2026 I went on a date with Mike Judge \u2014 so random \u2014 and the song isn\u2019t about him at all, but I was working on the music around that time, and I was going through a breakup from another relationship and had started to date a little. I was a fan, obviously, and we had a nice time, and he was like, \u201cI\u2019ll call you,\u201d and he never did. <\/p>\n<p>            I\u2019d been in a relationship for six years before that, so I\u2019d heard about the term ghosting, but this was my first experience with it, and it felt weird. Like, \u201cGod, this is such a bizarre emotion to experience.\u201d I was working on the song, thinking about [the phrase] \u201chang me out to dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Trust me: I wasn\u2019t devastated, but I tapped into that ick for the writing process. If Judge ever reads this, he\u2019s gonna laugh. He\u2019s a sweet guy \u2014 no shade at all. It was purely a coincidence that this happened in the week or night I wrote the song.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263816\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI\u2019m never trying to make \u201980s music; it\u2019s just the best music I know.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263811\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>\u201cScene Ballerina\u201d \u2014 the phrase itself, as well as the song and video \u2014 captures an archetype perfectly. Finding a very specific personality or social concept and stripping it down to its silliest form is something you do as well as anyone.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            When I write lyrics, I rarely come from my own experience. With a lot of my older tracks, my friend Casey [Obelisk] and I would write a play and come up with characters, and the songs would be from those characters\u2019 perspectives. \u201cNu2U,\u201d from the new record, is about a primordial entity that has sex with a caveman and explains what humans will do over the centuries, the pain we\u2019ll experience. Each song has a different archetype, a different character, because I like to bring that dynamic range to a record. What appeals to you most about that era of music?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I have a theory that the \u201980s was the top of the mountain. It\u2019s not that it was the best music ever made, but you had people like Bowie, who\u2019d worked on incredible records and knew everything about songwriting, got their hands on all this new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> \u2014 [digital] synthesizers and MIDI \u2014 and they were referencing the \u201950s, \u201960s, and \u201970s. After that, everyone\u2019s just referencing the \u201980s, and the mountain slopes down.<\/p>\n<p>            Think of Devo: You hear their record from \u201978 versus \u201984. Time is marked, and every year, you\u2019re like, \u201cOh, this sounds like \u201986 because technology was different then.\u201d The \u201990s were great, too, because they were just a little below the top of the mountain. But from the 2000s on, you don\u2019t know what time it is. Someone who made a song in 2010 could put it out now, and it could sound totally modern.<\/p>\n<p>            When I was a kid, they\u2019d have a Human League record on the radio. And still today, you go to the grocery store and hear \u201cDon\u2019t You Want Me.\u201d Why? Because it\u2019s fucking amazing. How has your relationship with technology changed as you\u2019ve moved from the super-lo-fi tracks you started out making to larger-scale productions?<\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>            I approach the concept of technology in almost a Philip K. Dick way. As technology evolves, we lose the idea of what is human. I do think there are a lot of really interesting things being done with AI. It\u2019s in and outside our minds, connecting us in a way that\u2019s almost unconscious. But it\u2019s terrifying because humanity can be swept away if we\u2019re not paying attention.<\/p>\n<p>            What\u2019s the difference between AI listening to a bunch of music and making a song and us [doing the same]? That\u2019s the big question, and I tend to have a very optimistic way of approaching it: I\u2019m a believer in humanity. I think you can subconsciously hear a genetic code in music [that allows us to] hear the difference between something made by a human and something made by AI. It reminds me of the opening scene in <i>Mulholland Drive<\/i>: a starlet fleeing her Hollywood captors \u2014 in this case, perhaps successfully.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            That and a bit of <i>Eyes Wide Shut<\/i>. It\u2019s a scene in a movie where [our protagonist] flees the scene and starts reflecting, like, \u201cWow, it was terrifying but beautiful at the same time.\u201d When you reach the top, you have access to anything you want, and that can get a little creepy.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>I guess it\u2019s heavily implied that she\u2019s part of the 1%, which didn\u2019t click for me until now. She\u2019s escaping that world, but she\u2019s got a chauffeur.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Exactly. She\u2019s in the back of a Bentley or something \u2014 \u201cDriver, window down! I have a tale to tell.\u201d I had to really tap into that character, in the lyrics but also the music. <\/p>\n<p>            I was listening to \u201cLove Comes Quickly\u201d by Pet Shop Boys. There\u2019s something about that song that gives you the chills and transports you to another place; you\u2019re somewhere in Europe, and there are castles all around, and you\u2019re riding a horse, and someone\u2019s getting killed. They\u2019re talking about something super banal, which is what Pet Shop Boys do: They have these really simple lyrics about the most superficial things. It goes to the top of the surface, but underneath that there\u2019s a world of depth and humor and art. I was trying to go for that with \u201cLaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <b>The video for that song is a direct reference to the album cover. Tell me about the symbolism of the triple flame.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Not to reference astrology \u2014 I know I\u2019ve already referenced tarot \u2014 but I do live in Los Angeles, and it\u2019s all around me. I\u2019m not a true believer, but I find it all fascinating; there\u2019s a lot of wisdom there because it comes from these archetypal, ancient myths. <\/p>\n<p>            I thought I was a Cancer my whole life, but then I did my chart, and it turns out I\u2019m actually a Leo, which is a fire sign. And my rising is Sagittarius, which is a fire sign. And my moon is Aries, another fire sign. They\u2019re all different types \u2014 cardinal, fixed, and mutable \u2014 but apparently, the essence of who I am is fire.<\/p>\n<p>            I\u2019m a dramatic person and I\u2019ve had a lot of trauma, and whatever makes me up, I embrace it.
