Characterizing it herself, Samms tells <em>Variety<\/em> most assuredly, \u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect part in that regard,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s so fun, and really interesting. It\u2019s that depth, all those different colors that Holly has to her character.\u201d In possibly a tiny hint of an answer to the question, Samms adds that she is working with \u201ca brilliant, strong, powerful, interesting villain now\u201d and there\u2019s \u201cgoing to be some interesting twists with Holly coming back to town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Representatives for the long-running ABC show \u2014 led by executive producer Frank Valentini \u2014 are remaining characteristically tight-lipped about Holly\u2019s latest return, only throwing out the crumb that she will be working with Jonathan Jackson, who is back as Lucky Spencer after exiting in 2015. Despite their longevity on the show \u2014 Samms joined the ensemble in 1982, Jackson was cast in 1993, and they\u2019ve both been on and off since \u2014 they have never worked together until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s such a gift that Frank has given me, working with Jonathan, who is, obviously, a very, very good actor,\u201d Samms says. \u201cThat\u2019s undisputed \u2014\u00a0but he\u2019s also really nice. That scenario of a woman other than Laura stealing Luke\u2019s heart could have annoyed the fans to the point of a revolt. But instead, Holly (and Samms) were wholeheartedly embraced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cI didn\u2019t realize when I started that I was the third attempt to find somebody for a new romantic relationship for Luke,\u201d she says. \u201cThey had tried really amazing people, like Janine Turner and Demi Moore. So I was sort of the last-ditch attempt in that regard. But I had no clue, which is probably extremely valuable and helped me a lot. I just came in sort of innocent, and \u2018I\u2019ll do the best I can\u2019 sort of thing. And I just somehow got away with it. I was very fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    And it has been one exciting storyline after another for Holly, which is why Samms happily returns when requested. The fans seem to adore her, which she\u2019s aware of and grateful for: \u201cThey\u2019ve been incredibly kind to me. They are an extraordinarily vocal group. That are very caring, for not just the show, but the actors on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Samms\u2019 English accent was part of her charm that drew fans in. Yet Holly was not only written to be American; Samms had to <em>sound<\/em> American when she auditioned. \u201cMy first auditions were with an American accent, and then [former executive producer] Gloria [Monty] heard me speaking and went, \u2018Oh, are you English?\u2019 And I said, yes. And they completely changed the story, and the character. More than anything, it was hugely relieving,\u201d she says with a laugh, \u201cbecause when you are doing that volume of work and dialogue, if I had to do a different accent on top of all of that, it would\u2019ve been very stressful or even <em>more<\/em> stressful, I should say.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  size-large alignnone\">\n<figure class=\"o-figure  lrv-u-font-family-secondary u-color-medium-grey lrv-u-border-b-1 u-border-color-light-grey-tint-two u-margin-b-150 lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((799\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-463572628.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-463572628.jpg 3600w, https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-463572628.jpg?resize=150,117 150w, https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-463572628.jpg?resize=300,234 300w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(min-width: 87.5rem) 1000px, (min-width: 78.75rem) 681px, (min-width: 48rem) 450px, (max-width: 48rem) 250px\" height=\"799\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-padding-t-1 lrv-u-padding-b-1\">\n<p>                    <span class=\"u-color-medium-grey lrv-a-font-secondary-regular-xs u-margin-b-050\">Emma Samms and Anthony Geary \u201cGeneral Hospital\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n                            <cite class=\"u-color-medium-grey lrv-a-font-secondary-regular-xxs\">Disney General Entertainment Con<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Samms has had a rough few years, as she has been hit pretty hard with long COVID, and was unable to leave her hometown of London for outside work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cI\u2019ve been like this now for four and a half years nearly, and it\u2019s baffling to not just the people who have it, but it\u2019s baffling to the doctors,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are some very smart people who are investigating and studying it and doing research, but all they keep finding is more and more damage that COVID has done to people\u2019s bodies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cI got some really good scans done and they found that at some point I had had myocarditis, which has scarred my heart,\u201d Samms continues. \u201cThe consequences of COVID \u2014 I think we still have only just scratched the surface, and it\u2019s terrifying to me that people think we are no longer in a pandemic. Because they so desperately want it to not affect them, they sort of pretend that it is has gone, and it so hasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The possibility of anti-masking laws being legislated has Samms very concerned. \u201cThe anti-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> of it all is baffling because I am the living, walking proof that COVID has been a mass disabling event. If it wasn\u2019t for the fact that people at \u2018General Hospital\u2019 are so understanding of it and accommodating, I would not be able to work like I do. When I\u2019m back in the U.K., and anytime I\u2019m not on the set, I have to lie down, I have to put my feet up. I have something called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, so if I stand too long, I keel over. So the only cure, or the only thing that makes you feel a bit better, is to lie down flat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    She continues: \u201cThe powers that be at \u2018General Hospital\u2019 accommodate that, but not every production would. They write most of my scenes sitting down. They\u2019ve put me in a dressing room that\u2019s really close to the elevator.
