The pair\u2019s collaborative mixtape <i>2 SLIZZY 2 SEXY<\/i> crept across digital airwaves that summer, offering a shamelessly raunchy spin on the sample drill beats favored by New Yorkers like Shawny Binladen and Kay Flock.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263972\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cAt first they wasn\u2019t jacking us,\u201d Chow Lee tells me over a video call late in July. \u201cNow everybody wants to sexy drill.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            And he does mean <i>everybody<\/i> \u2014 Bktherula, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, NAV, Jay Critch, and Drake are just a few of those who have t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed Cash Cobain for features. That\u2019s before we get into the myriad artists tesselating the sound in their own style, from R2R Moe and Kelz to Vontee the Singer and Baby Osama. The duo\u2019s randy banter spearheaded an alternate vision of their hometown\u2019s sound du jour, unburdened by stick talk and its attendant surveillance. <\/p>\n<p>            Unfazed by the saturation, the pioneers have only leveled up in the two years since. As Cash has pushed his production further into moody, atmospheric terrain, welding drill patterns to wonky melodies and muted drums, Chow has grown as a rapper, developing his tones and rhythms. Or last summer\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PqmIOwgYmIc\">jatty<\/a>,\u201d where Lee breezily issued choreography instructions over a delicious fragment of Toni Braxton: \u201cTwo steps to the right step back \/ Two steps to the left step back \/ Turn around shake your ass then clap.\u201d These songs aren\u2019t chaste by any stretch, but they feel more risqu\u00e9 than obscene, splitting the difference between Cash Cobain\u2019s bricked-up hymns and the starry-eyed ballads of sexy drill\u2019s rookie of the year Wolfacejoeyy.<\/p>\n<p>            <i>Sex Drive<\/i> largely follows suit, although Chow still prefers rapping about \u201cderogatory shit\u201d (his words, not mine). He self-deprecates early on the album, saying \u201cI\u2019m not really lyrical \/ I\u2019m just talkin\u2019 my shit on the beat and it works.\u201d But even his sleaziest ideas here \u2014 group sex with best friends, unabashed infidelity, getting busy in a church \u2014 are rendered with winking self-awareness and a silly eye for detail. He\u2019s owning his failings as a partner on \u201cGMT\u201d (\u201cI like bad bitches that\u2019s hoes, that\u2019s how I lost my bitch\u201d) and dispensing long-distance relationship advice on \u201cadvance w her!\u201d (\u201cMe and my bitch on tour at the same time, took my dick and then I mold it\u201d).<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263975\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>             It\u2019s not just his pen that\u2019s sharpened: <i>Sex Drive<\/i> finds Chow firmly in the pocket, teasing out stop-start meters across a startling breadth of instrumentals. \u201cPeople don&#8217;t even know what lane I could get in yet,\u201d Chow tells me. \u201cThey just know me from sexy drill. That&#8217;s why I tried to switch it up, [though] not too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Whether the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/powr_trav\/?hl=en\">PoWRTrav<\/a> soul chop on \u201csettings!\u201d or the woozy muffle of \u201cSwag it,\u201d Lee\u2019s restless flow never slips out of sync, yielding some of his best songs to date. Delirious birdcall synths puncture the haze of \u201cGMT;\u201d when a pulsing 808 drops in, Chow deftly weaves between its kicks, grinning, \u201cYou got some shit on you bae, you could sell it \/ I ain\u2019t really telling\u2019 you to sell it but if you gon sell it make sure they Zelle ya.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Late album verses by Flo Milli and Anycia are silky highlights for everyone involved: the feminine perspective keeps <i>Sex Drive<\/i> feeling messy rather than misogynist, and the vindictive repartee of \u201cget back!\u201d is effortlessly slinky. Elsewhere, \u201cbangbang!\u201d features what I can only describe as a MIKE-type beat, propelled by evocative chords and riddled with unwieldy drums. And when Cash Cobain and Bay Swag swing through \u201cact bad twin!,\u201d the trio sound downright religious rapping about paramours over a bleary PARTYNEXTDOOR sample.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263976\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CHOW LEE - act bad twin! A lot of gems on there got overlooked, and \u2018jatty\u2019 was one of them.\u201d What might frustrate another artist seems to have only motivated Chow, and his meticulous approach to his latest record is apparent on wax as well as in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>            The FADER caught up with Chow Lee at the end of July to chat about sample beats, sexy drill, and his new album <i>Sex Drive<\/i>. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263985\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>The FADER: How would you compare Sex Drive with your last album <i>HOURS AFTER THE CLUB<\/i>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            <b>Chow Lee:<\/b> We still talking about women, we catering to the girls and, you know, still talking about sleazy shit, derogatory shit. But the difference is, <i>HOURS AFTER THE CLUB<\/i> the character I was in was just super nightlife vibe, outside shit. <i>Sex Drive<\/i>, I\u2019m on my fucking jock shit, y\u2019know what I\u2019m saying? Those two specifically I made for [<i>Sex Drive<\/i>]. I made it all one song, but it was too long \u2014 people tend to spin the shorts, so I just cut them into two, type shit. And the outro [\u201cSkeleTONs\u201d], I handpicked that one. And \u201cSettings\u201d too for sure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>\u201cSettings\u201d and \u201cSkeletons\u201d both gave me Drake vibes, especially when you&#8217;re doing those slowed-down synth outros. It\u2019s very \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E55eNpguvzE?si=AyLz_8qrhLt9vfw1&amp;t=322\">Shut It Down<\/a>\u201d part two.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            That&#8217;s where I got it from, to be honest. I started to overdo it [trying] to make it mine and do it in my way. I like reversing the beat and shit \u2014 I just like fucking around with sounds. I don&#8217;t know how to make beats, but we gonna learn some.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263987\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>There are a lot of different synths and these almost ambient textures and sounds on this album, so I was really curious to hear about your process for choosing beats, because you&#8217;ve got access to some of the best producers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> right now.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s really all them for real, but if I\u2019m gonna sample some shit, like\u2026 I don\u2019t like to just send somebody a song and be like, \u201cyo just sample this, just do anything.\u201d Usually it\u2019s certain parts of the song where it\u2019s like, \u201cYo, I want this part of the song and make it original so they can\u2019t even tell the sample.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            I do it like that because certain people just throw the fucking song in the background and put drums over it and call it a sample \u2014 I don\u2019t really like doing that shit. You gotta make it authentic. Even though it&#8217;s a sample, you still gotta try to make it yours.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>What was going through your head during \u201csettings!\u201d where you&#8217;re like, \u201cthis not a setting for rallies?\u201d It\u2019s so funny and memorable.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I don&#8217;t know, bro! I was just rapping. I like to make scenarios up in my head, so I just kept going. When I do shit like that, it&#8217;s a little gift of mine, I could just make some shit up real quick. So certain songs would be fiction and certain songs would be not fiction [because] I could do that shit.
