The two bonded over their shared love of slacker bands in 2011, and since then they\u2019ve built a discography brimming with ramshackle, garage-pop charm. The first Hinds demos had Cosials and Perrote doubling up on instruments, since they didn\u2019t have a bassist and drummer; once they finally fleshed out the full band, they went on to record three albums, support their idols The Strokes, and tour across the globe. Already heroes at home in Spain, it felt like they\u2019d conquered the world.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263957\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            But after touring their third album, <i>The Prettiest Curse<\/i>, in 2022, Hinds\u2019 bassist, Ade Martin, and drummer, Amber Grimbergen, abruptly left. Now without a rhythm section, they also found themselves without management and a record label, after the pandemic devastated the music industry. Forget about a fourth album \u2014 they weren\u2019t sure if they\u2019d be able to continue as a band.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cNow, we finally can say that Hinds is not gonna be over,\u201d says Cosials. \u201cThere were moments during these four years that we doubted it. And suddenly it\u2019s like, WAH!!! Hinds! FOR LIFE!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Enter <i>VIVA HINDS!<\/i>. It&#8217;s an apt title for the band and their \u201cnever-say-die\u201d attitude. It\u2019s the first album Hinds are releasing without a permanent rhythm section, relying on producer Pete Robertson and producer\/engineer Tom Roach to help realize their vision and bring it to life. <i>VIVA HINDS! <\/i>is the result of a band clawing their way back from the brink with their most adventurous album to date. It\u2019s a signifier of their friendship, and their statement of intent to the world: Cosials and Perrote were never going to give up that easily. What\u2019s it been like to finally have new material, and to be playing it live?<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>Carlotta Cosials:<\/b> The job of a musician is to do music and play shows. For four years, we weren\u2019t able to do either of those things, because of the pandemic and our own circumstances. So suddenly, having an album and being able to share one song with the world\u2026 I felt like myself again, finally.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Ana Perrote: <\/b>It\u2019s weird to be a band without doing band things. We spent so much time trying to survive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>Was there a point where you thought that Hinds couldn\u2019t continue? <br \/><\/b><br \/><b>CC:<\/b> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>AP:<\/b> Not because we didn\u2019t want to, but, it was just one of those situations where it felt like if we were looking for a sign to stop being a band\u2026 we were getting so many signs. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>CC: <\/b>Everything kept going wrong.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>AP: <\/b>Anything that could go wrong, went wrong. Our castle of sand got demolished by life and circumstances. We never thought, \u201cShould we keep going?\u201d We always knew in our hearts that we wanted to keep going, but at some point\u2026 It felt like we were fighting the world to keep being a band. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>I like what you said on stage, that you guys were broke in money but millionaires in friendship. One of my favorite things about watching you live is how clear your friendship is \u2014 you have so much fun on stage!<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>AP: <\/b>Some people are just ashamed of having fun. Like, oh, I need to play it cool. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>CC: <\/b>I think it\u2019s considered cool to not make an effort, or to not care. To be mysterious. Mystery has always been very attractive, I have to admit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>AP:<\/b> If you don\u2019t do music for fun, I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing. You\u2019re not here for the money. You\u2019re not here for the easy life. So my expectations were somewhere else, focusing on the sound, the music\u2026  [I had to convince myself] that these are good songs, that they were just a bit different than what we used to do. And now I love [the album], and I really understand that it had to be the album that it is. For me, it was more about accepting whatever [direction] we were going, rather than being like, okay, we\u2019re going to have to do this kind of music for this kind of audience. And we were gonna make this album, however weird, sad, serious, or fun.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>This was your first time heading into the studio without a full band.<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>AP:<\/b> When we had a band, we could overthink everything before going to the studio. Some of the demos were more developed and we knew the vibe we were going for. Some songs we were completely lost [on]. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>You mentioned how you were skeptical about your song \u201cStranger.\u201d Did you have to work hard to get the confidence to write about more difficult subjects?<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>AP: <\/b>It\u2019s what you were saying before, it couldn\u2019t have happened if we weren&#8217;t a couple of best friends. I really struggled, over the last couple of years, with my mental health. Obviously we talked about it as friends, but we hadn\u2019t written about it. And we were in London writing songs. So we were like, \u201cOkay, what do we write about?\u201d And CC told me, why don\u2019t we talk about what you\u2019re going through, if it\u2019s okay. She was super respectful. I don\u2019t know if it was the hardest, but we thought that nothing could be worse.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>What made you want to continue?<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>CC: <\/b>I remember us looking at each other, and being like, of course. Not even a second of hesitation. Only you and me. We were like&#8230;. there\u2019s an expression in Spanish. <i>\u201cYou gotta put your sleeves up to do it.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>            <b>AP: <\/b>We decided we were gonna carry on no matter what. We weren\u2019t gonna wait for a record deal. We weren\u2019t gonna wait for a manager. At some point we thought we might have to produce it ourselves, for \u20ac2,000 in a home studio.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>CC: <\/b>How can we make this happen for cheap, you know? <\/p>\n<p>            <b>AP: <\/b>Just as we decided to start working towards that plan, everything started falling into place. We found management in England. We found the girls. But I\u2019m sure it happened because we didn\u2019t wait for it to happen. Our plan now is, we do it, and then we figure out how later. Because otherwise, things don\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>CC: <\/b>We wanted to take it slowly, like, let\u2019s worry about the album now.
