telling that Wednesday\u2019s version of Drive-By Truckers\u2019 \u201cWomen Without Whiskey\u201d<\/span> is the most faithful on their covers compilation <i>Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling \u2019Em Up<\/i>. Like many of Mike Cooley\u2019s best songs, \u201cWomen Without Whiskey\u201d meditates on misery and lands on absurdity. The protagonist promises to give up drinking as long as he can drink for a few more months; he expects to think about liquor long after death. On Wednesday\u2019s version, guitarist and backing vocalist MJ Lenderman takes over lead vocals from his then-girlfriend Karly Hartzman and, while he isn\u2019t exactly doing an impression of the D-BT\u2019s Mike Cooley, there isn\u2019t much to split them. Lenderman may have grown up resenting Drive-By Truckers \u2014 he mistrusted any music his dad loved that much \u2014 but he eventually became a zealous convert. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2188391421\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1259513636\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wednesdayband.bandcamp.com\/album\/mowing-the-leaves-instead-of-piling-em-up\">Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling &#8217;em Up by Wednesday<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s not hard to decipher the influences behind Lenderman\u2019s fourth solo album, <i>Manning Fireworks<\/i>, out today via ANTI-: Jason Molina and David Berman, the late greats of alt-country songwriting; Cooley and Patterson Hood, who wrote troubled and troubling characters in their own conflicted South; and Hartzman herself. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/southwestreview.com\/the-guest-list-mj-lenderman\">In interviews<\/a>, he\u2019s referenced the hard-boiled Southern writers Harry Crews and Larry Brown, the funnier and weirder Richard Brautigan, and the pitch-black comic film director Todd Solondz. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Lenderman resonates with art that takes an absurd <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to everyday misery, and it shows on <i>Manning Fireworks<\/i>. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/the-perfect-little-lines-of-david-berman\">Amanda Petrusich wrote in her obituary for Berman<\/a> that he \u201cinstinctively understood that there is beauty and humor in these dumb, ordinary things \u2014 that the mundane might be the only place to really go searching for the sublime.\u201d Lenderman shares this philosophy. \u201cThe things that are funniest to me tend to be funny because there\u2019s some poignancy or some sadness to them,\u201d he said in an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudandquiet.com\/interview\/mj-lenderman-ive-learned-a-lot-about-the-beauty-of-working-together-just-from-playing-in-wednesday\/\">Loud and Quiet<\/a> last year. Here, on \u201cJoker Lips,\u201d he sings, \u201cPlease don&#8217;t laugh \/ Only half of what I said \/ Was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            The difference between Lenderman and many of his influences is that it really is a half-half split. \u201cWomen Without Whiskey\u201d is an emotional slog, an exploration of alcoholism and desperation that never takes its eye off the bottle. Lenderman\u2019s style is not so oppressive, and he seems to make a point of weaving a thread of absurdity into almost every verse. The man in the middle of the slacked-out and charming \u201cShe\u2019s Leaving You\u201d is given the ultimate mid-life crisis cliche: \u201cGo rent a Ferrari \/ And sing the blues \/ Believe that Clapton was the second coming.\u201d The sneering protagonist of \u201cWristwatch\u201d brags about a \u201chouseboat docked at the Himbo Dome.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1466380038\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mjlenderman.bandcamp.com\/album\/manning-fireworks\">Manning Fireworks by MJ Lenderman<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Elsewhere he just straight-up calls people jerks. The opener and title track traces a man\u2019s growth from \u201cperfect little baby\u201d to \u201cjerk.\u201d Two tracks later, on \u201cRudolph,\u201d he asks, \u201cHow many roads must a man walk down til he learns \/ He\u2019s just a jerk?\u201d His down-and-outs are at most a couple of lines from stumbling face-first into a wall of irony. Near the top of \u201cRip Torn,\u201d someone passes out in a bowl of Lucky Charms. <\/p>\n<p>            Lenderman sings these misfortunes with a slight croak and a gentle drawl, the types of things that will deepen and knot with age. His delivery sounds effortless, never lazy, just as the songs themselves borrow from alt-country\u2019s slacker side without ever succumbing to sloppiness. Part of his gift \u2013 part of what has turned him into this year\u2019s most adored indie musician \u2013 is how loose, unstudied, and even naive he sounds in the middle of songs that, on closer inspection, are meticulously poignant. Sometimes his lines fit together at perfect angles, as though he\u2019s found the only syllable that would fit into a particular corner of melody. My favorite is on \u201cRip Torn\u201d: \u201cYou said, \u2018There\u2019s men and then there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> \/ Then there\u2019s men and Men In Black \/ You said, \u2018There\u2019s milkshakes and there\u2019s smoothies\u2019 \/ You always lose me when you talk like that.\u201d It would read like a nursery rhyme if it weren\u2019t so melancholic.<\/p>\n<p>            For all of that character work, though, <i>Manning Fireworks<\/i> peaks when Lenderman writes into a mirror. The best song here is \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know The Shape I\u2019m In,\u201d with its delicate acoustic guitar and super-compressed keyboard-generated beat. Absurdity and melancholy are utterly inseparable, a picture of Noah\u2019s Ark at the water park, a break-up under a half-mast McDonald\u2019s flag. When a clarinet blows in, adding a little quiet dignity to the agony, Lenderman shrinks it to size: \u201cClarinet \/ Singin\u2019 it\u2019s lonesome duck walk.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Someone\u2019s being a jerk in that song too.
