And why exactly do more people need to use it?<\/p>\n<p>AI systems are trained on incomprehensibly large data sets using advanced mathematics most people don&#8217;t understand. They produce results we have no way of verifying. Even flagship, state-of-the-art systems produce output riddled with errors.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/149272\/chatgpts-performance-is-slipping-new-study-says\">ChatGPT appears to be growing less accurate over time<\/a>. Even at its best it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inc-aus.com\/kit-eaton\/how-many-rs-in-strawberry-this-ai-cant-tell-you.html\">can&#8217;t tell you what letters<\/a> are in the word &#8220;strawberry.&#8221; Meanwhile, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2024\/05\/31\/google-ai-glue-to-pizza-viral-blunders\/\">Google&#8217;s Gemini chatbot has recommended putting glue on pizza<\/a>, among other comical failures.<\/p>\n<p>Given all this, public distrust of AI seems entirely reasonable. The case for using more of it seems quite weak\u2014and also potentially dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>                                                                                                        <!-- TechX - News - In-article --><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_risks\"><\/span>AI risks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Much has been made of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/we-need-to-focus-on-ais-real-harms-not-imaginary-existential-risks\/\">&#8220;existential threat&#8221; of AI<\/a>, and how it will lead to job losses. The harms AI presents range from the overt\u2014such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/how-gms-cruise-robotaxi-tech-failures-led-it-drag-pedestrian-20-feet-2024-01-26\/\">autonomous vehicles that hit pedestrians<\/a>\u2014to the more subtle, such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-amazon-com-jobs-automation-insight-idUSKCN1MK08G\/\">AI recruitment systems that demonstrate bias against women<\/a> or AI legal system <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/how-we-analyzed-the-compas-recidivism-algorithm\">tools with a bias against people of color<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other harms include fraud from deepfakes of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/04\/asia\/deepfake-cfo-scam-hong-kong-intl-hnk\/index.html\">coworkers<\/a> and of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/science\/annals-of-artificial-intelligence\/the-terrifying-ai-scam-that-uses-your-loved-ones-voice\">loved ones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Never mind that the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ia.acs.org.au\/article\/2024\/humans-outperform-ai-in-australian-govt-trial.html\">federal government&#8217;s own recent reporting<\/a> showed humans are more effective, efficient and productive than AI.<\/p>\n<p>But if <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/everydayconcepts.io\/maslows-hammer\/\">all you have is a hammer<\/a>, everything looks like a nail.<\/p>\n<p>Technology adoption still falls into this familiar trope. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digileaders.com\/more-than-a-hammer-and-nails-approach-needed-for-ai\/\">AI is not always the best tool for the job<\/a>. But when faced with an exciting new technology, we often use it without considering if we should.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of encouraging more people to use AI, we should all learn what is a good, and not good, use of AI.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_the_technology_we_need_to_trust%E2%80%94or_the_government\"><\/span>Is it the technology we need to trust\u2014or the government?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Just what does the Australian government get from more people using AI?<\/p>\n<p>One of the largest risks is the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s43681-024-00443-4\">leaking of private data<\/a>. These tools are collecting our private information, our intellectual property and our thoughts on a scale we have never before seen.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this data, in the case of ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Otter.ai and other AI models, is not processed onshore in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>These companies preach <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/otter.ai\/privacy-security\">transparency, privacy and security<\/a>. But it is often hard to uncover if <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/botpress.com\/blog\/does-chatgpt-save-data\">your data is used<\/a> for training their newer models, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.att.com\/blogs\/security-essentials\/microsoft-bing-ai-chat-is-a-bigger-security-issue-than-it-seems\">how they secure it<\/a>, or what other organizations or governments have access to that data.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, federal Minister for Government Services, Bill Shorten, presented the government&#8217;s proposed Trust Exchange program, which raised concerns about the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/efa.org.au\/trusted-exchange-system-australia-to-become-the-mother-of-all-personal-data-honeypots\/\">collection of even more data about Australian citizens<\/a>. In his speech to the National Press Club, Shorten openly noted the support from large technology companies, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ministers.dss.gov.au\/speeches\/15616\">including Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If data about Australians was to be collated across different technology platforms, including AI, we could see widespread mass surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>But even more worryingly, we have observed the power of technology to influence politics and behavior.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brycehoffman\/2024\/03\/10\/automation-bias-what-it-is-and-how-to-overcome-it\/\">Automation bias<\/a> is the terminology we use for the tendency for users to believe the technology is &#8220;smarter&#8221; then they are. Too much trust in AI poses even more risk to Australians\u2014by encouraging more use of technology without adequate education, we could be subjecting our population to a comprehensive system of automated surveillance and control.<\/p>\n<p>And although you might be able to escape this system, it would undermine <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> trust and cohesion and influence people without them knowing.<\/p>\n<p>These factors are even more reason to regulate the use of AI, as the Australian government is now looking to do. But doing so does not have to be accompanied by a forceful encouragement to also use it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lets_dial_down_the_blind_hype\"><\/span>Let&#8217;s dial down the blind hype<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The topic of AI regulation is important.<\/p>\n<p>The International Organization for Standardization has established a standard on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/sectors\/it-technologies\/ai\">use and management of AI systems<\/a>.
