Warp<\/a>, a young payroll startup in New York, is in the spotlight following controversial posts from an account tied to the company.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, an account posting under the name Vittorio wrote on X, \u201ci like White people more, they do more, they are better for the roles i need to climb the kardashev scale i\u2019ll let blacks run and play basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n

The account profile included a badge indicating \u201cVittorio\u201d was affiliated with Warp<\/a>, whose software focuses on automating state-by-state tax compliance<\/a> and was part of the winter 2023 cohort at incubator Y Combinator. The badge is something that X (formerly Twitter<\/a>) created as part of the X for Business program in 2022 and is usually given to employees, but Warp app<\/a>ears to have distributed it more broadly as part of an unconventional marketing strategy.<\/p>\n

Indeed, when an outcry invariably ensured, it focused not just on \u201cVittorio,\u201d but on Warp, as well, which later disavowed his post<\/a> as \u201cwrong,\u201d adding, \u201cWe believe excellence can come from anywhere.\u201d <\/p>\n

The company added that Vittorio was \u201cnever a Warp employee\u201d and said it had removed his affiliate badge.<\/p>\n

Vittorio\u2019s post and account have since been deleted. Warp also said it was \u201ccutting down on affiliate badges more broadly, keeping it to a smaller group of people that we personally know.\u201d <\/p>\n

The company did not immediately respond to a TechCrunch email asking for more details about its relationship with affiliates, some of which defended that original post. (One of these, \u201cPico Paco,\u201d said<\/a> \u201cvittorio did nothing wrong\u201d and that this was just a \u201cpr crisis,\u201d before appearing to also lose its affiliate badge<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, writer Gergely Orosz complained<\/a> that his entire X feed had become full of blue checkmarked<\/a> accounts affiliated with Warp \u201cposting what feels like \u2018engagement bait\u2019\u201d \u2014 not just self-consciously edgy political opinions but also copycat posts seemingly designed to go viral.<\/p>\n

Orosz speculated that Warp was pursuing a new kind of marketing strategy: \u201cGive this affiliate badge (that most companies would use for eg employees) to \u2018hip\u2019 accounts who then draw attention to Warp and also promote it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a now-deleted post<\/a>, Warp CEO Ayush Sharma wrote that \u201cfreedom of speech is essential,\u201d and that Warp is \u201ccomfortable with taking risks while also being open to feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n

When another poster suggested this means Warp is comfortable with racism, Sharma replied<\/a>, \u201cno, talking mainly about all the folks who are like \u2018why do you give out warp badge to ppl\u2019 \u2013 we are okay with trying\/experimenting with all this, and as I said, always open to feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n
