“#Cuffing season is coming early this year as singles fear lockdown alone<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Now that Labor Day has come and gone, New Yorkers are desperately seeking someone \u2014 anyone \u2014 to Netflix and chill with.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m getting anxious thinking, \u2018Winter is coming and you\u2019re still single,\u2019\u2009\u201d Ryan Higgins, 29, a former hospitality worker who\u2019s about to start graduate school, told The Post.<\/p>\n

Once the pandemic hit, Higgins\u2019 roommate moved out of their Astoria apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was alone for two months straight,\u201d he said, noting he initially enjoyed the me time, \u201cbut this is no longer cute.\u201d Now, Higgins is eager to find a COVID cling.<\/p>\n

Cuffing season \u2014 that time of year when singles seek out someone to shack up with during the cold months \u2014 usually kicks off in November, but this year it\u2019s starting early, as freaked-out singles worry about another spike of coronavirus infections.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had an uptick in inquiries for sure,\u201d said Emma Vernon, a Manhattan-based millennial matchmaker. \u201cA lot of people have reached their breaking point with isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n

When COVID case numbers began rising in New York in March, swipers\u00a0began their search for a lockdown bae\u00a0on Craigslist, over FaceTime\u00a0and even via reality-TV-style dating shows held on Instagram. Warm weather brought a relative return to normalcy, with outdoor dining offering safe, al fresco dating. But this new change in seasons heralds a return to nights spent eating takeout in front of the tube \u2014 a prospect many fear doing alone.<\/p>\n

Higgins said he\u2019s been on dating app<\/a>s a lot more than usual, even if he is going on fewer dates, since many singles aren\u2019t looking to commit during COVID \u2014 \u201cYou realize it\u2019s all going nowhere,\u201d he said of his online encounters.<\/p>\n

And so he\u2019s also hitting up old neighborhood flings, and said an ideal cuff is someone who will want to take trip<\/a>s out of the city. \u201cI want someone who wants to go hiking and skiing,\u201d he said. He\u2019s also willing to bake.<\/p>\n

Higgins has perfected his chocolate-chip-cookie recipe, and currently keeps pre-cut dough in the freezer. \u201cI take one or two out every night to put in the oven,\u201d he said. \u201cI want someone who I can make a whole batch of cookies for and we can just eat all 10 or 12 at one time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Pentecost, a 26-year-old marketing coordinator, will settle for a cuddle buddy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel pressure to find that person to spend time with,\u201d said the Richmond, Va., resident. She scans for potential cuffing partners while walking her dog, and on her morning coffee runs to Starbucks, where someone recently made a move.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ate Thai food and he helped me move a couch the other day,\u201d she said of the low-key meet-up.<\/p>\n

She jokes that her suitor\u2019s \u201capplication is pending\u201d for the cuffing season. Still, \u201ca handy person would be great,\u201d she said, noting she just moved into a new apartment.<\/p>\n

Some crave handsier partners.<\/p>\n

Melissa, a personal chef who lives in Inwood and declined to give her last name for privacy reasons, is at higher risk for COVID-19 due to a chronic illness. But that hasn\u2019t stopped the 37-year-old \u2014 who identifies as \u201cethically nonmonogamous\u201d \u2014 from wanting to find a cold-weather connection.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m interested in people who have partners that they live with,\u201d said Melissa, who recently planned her first in-person date of the past six months, and made sure to video chat with him and his wife before the meet-up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf things go well, I\u2019d love to just deal with this one guy in person, maskless, until this thing is over or I get a vaccine,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t just sit alone with my plants and my cats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, meeting a potential cuffing partner has never been more challenging.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the scariest dating has ever been,\u201d said Vernon. \u201cDating can potentially kill you or a loved one. The stakes have never been higher.\u201d<\/p>\n

To the long list of dating deal-breakers you can now add COVID-related turnoffs such as showing up sans mask or meeting up indoors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still a taboo-ness [to dating right now]. Some people will say, \u2018Let\u2019s go get drinks tomorrow,\u2019 and another will say, \u2018Let\u2019s have a social<\/a>ly distant picnic in the park two Sundays from now,\u2019\u2009\u201d said Higgins, who considers himself COVID-safe but not excessively stringent about distancing. \u201cThere\u2019s this weird middle ground we have to get to.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for Higgins, it\u2019s a fine line that\u2019s worth navigating.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I don\u2019t have someone to cook for during this winter,\u201d he said, \u201cI\u2019m going to come out looking like a bear that just went into hibernation.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
