Funds have been promised by one government and then <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cyx5x44vnyeo\">whisked away<\/a> by another in the space of less than a year.<\/p>\n<p>While the UK government recently announced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/over-100-million-boost-to-quantum-hubs-to-develop-life-saving-blood-tests-and-resilient-security-systems\">\u00a3100mn in support<\/a> for five \u201cquantum hubs,\u201d the country\u2019s quantum sector is concerned over the level of funding security \u2014 and how increasingly risk-averse regulation could stifle international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Phasecraft is a leader in quantum algorithms \u2014 computational methods designed specifically for quantum computers and their qubits. Its mission is to move quantum computing into an era of practical <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication, despite the challenges still faced by today\u2019s error-prone NISQ-era quantum hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the company has released a white paper asking the government not to squander the opportunity for the UK to become a global leader in quantum computing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<p class=\"channel-cta-title\">The <\/p>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, government support and encouragement has been absolutely crucial for quantum technologies, and quantum computing in particular,\u201d Ashley Montanaro, co-founder and CEO of Phasecraft, told TNW.<\/p>\n<p>He added that even though the National Quantum Strategy has a commitment of \u00a32.5bn, it\u2019s clear that there are \u201ca lot of demands on government funding,\u201d and there have been cases, for example, in AI, where government funding has recently been cut.<\/p>\n<p>However, continued and predictable public funding is essential to maintain momentum and support the \u201chigh-risk, high-reward\u201d nature of quantum <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> R&amp;D. (By 2035, quantum computing alone <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/mckinsey-explainers\/what-is-quantum-computing\">could account<\/a> for $1.3 trillion in value.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it\u2019s important to make the case that in quantum technologies, the UK in particular, really has an opportunity to be a world leader and be the home of the next \u2018quantum Microsoft\u2019 or \u2018quantum Nvidia\u2019,\u201d said Montanaro.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Geopolitical_risk_leads_to_heavy_quantum_tech_regulation\"><\/span>Geopolitical risk leads to heavy quantum tech regulation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Adding to the uncertainty niggling the quantum community is the increasing trend of export controls on sensitive technologies. This has the potential to stifle the cooperation and collaboration which have allowed the sector to make crucial breakthroughs in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Governments] are starting to become more nervous about the security implications of quantum,\u201d Montanaro said. \u201cAnd while we think it\u2019s important to be alert to this, we think it\u2019s also critical not to stifle the technology by over-regulating and over-controlling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK along with France, Spain, and the Netherlands have introduced export controls on quantum computer systems over 34 qubits. This sentiment is echoed in other regulatory wording across the globe, stemming from a desire to contain tech that could be applicable in military use.<\/p>\n<p>However, regulation, Phasecraft argues, should be focused on the use of quantum technologies, rather than the technology itself, so as not to risk stifling innovation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Looking_for_quantum_tech_talent_across_the_Atlantic\"><\/span>Looking for quantum tech talent across the Atlantic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Other necessary support identified by the company includes finding ways of bridging the talent gap. In August 2024, there were over 37,000 vacancies in the UK quantum sector. Promoting cross-border and interdisciplinary collaboration would maximise the limited talent pool and accelerate innovation, Phasecraft argues.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2019 by Montanaro, Toby Cubitt (the aptitude of the name never ceases to amaze me), and John Morton, Phasecraft is a spinout from University College London and the University of Bristol. It recently won a government grant of \u00a31.2mn to develop quantum algorithms for optimisation problems in energy grids.
