\n In two separate cases today, the EU\u2019s Court of Justice ruled in favour of back taxes and fines against App<\/a>le and Google totalling <\/span>\u20ac15.4bn, <\/span>a major victory in the bloc\u2019s ongoing battle with big tech.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first ruling, the EU\u2019s highest court has ordered Apple to pay Ireland \u20ac13.1bn in back taxes, bringing an end to the <\/span>biggest tax dispute<\/span> in history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EU Court of Justice\u2019s judgement backs the European Commission, which accused Apple of benefitting from \u201csubstantially and artificially lowered tax\u201d in Ireland since 1991.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIreland granted Apple unlawful aid which Ireland is required to recover,\u201d the Court of Justice said on Tuesday, adding that its ruling was the \u201cfinal judgement in the matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple will now have to pay Ireland \u20ac13.1bn in back taxes along with \u20ac1.2bn worth of interest \u2014 totalling a whopping \u20ac14.3bn. That\u2019s <\/span>roughly equal to Ireland\u2019s entire annual healthcare budget.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b\u200bThe case is the most high-profile example of EU watchdog chief Margrethe Vestager\u2019s campaign against so-called \u201csweetheart\u201d deals that offer multinationals favourable tax terms in EU states. But it\u2019s far from Vestager\u2019s only battle with tech giants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a separate case today, the EU Court of Justice ruled in favour of<\/span> a \u20ac2.4bn fine for Google<\/span>, levied by the bloc\u2019s antitrust regulators seven years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017, the Commission found Google guilty of favouring its shopping service in internet searches and thereby abusing its market dominance in Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Apple, Google fought the decision. And like Apple, it lost.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
