However, the evidence suggests otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google\u2019s misleading claim of \u201chundreds of competitors.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While many ad tech providers exist, Google dominates key market segments such as ad exchanges, ad networks and demand-side platforms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Though Google has competitors in the most basic sense of the word (i.e., there are other players in search), the gap between their share of the market and the second largest (Microsoft) is vast and has been for many years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/google-is-top-destination-ad-spend-genai-era\">majority of digital ad spend flows through Google\u2019s ad tech stack<\/a>, limiting 2048px\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Buying online ads isn\u2019t cheap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Several reports this year have shown that advertising costs increased:\n<ul>\n<li>Google search CPCs up 9%, pushing ad spend up 17% \u2013 leading to brands looking to diversify their ad spend.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Report: Google Search CPC up 13% YoY; ad spend growth slowing \u2013 where retail alone saw a 5 yr 50% increase in CPC<\/li>\n<li>Search ad costs rise, conversion rates decline again in 2024 \u2013 where CPCc increased across 60% of industries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I asked some experts to discuss <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/public-policy\/google-ad-tech-sept-2024\/\">this blog post<\/a> in which Google argued that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are several other ad tech companies that compete in the space.<\/li>\n<li>Ad buyers mix and match tools with rivals; therefore, they don\u2019t get all the fees.<\/li>\n<li>Their fees are lower than the industry average.<\/li>\n<li>Small businesses will be hurt the most by this case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/robertallenbrady\/\">Robert Brady<\/a> founder of Righteous Marketing, said Google is presenting a masterclass of painting oneself in a positive light:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe only statement I specifically disagree with is in the second to last paragraph where Google says \u2018The ability to buy online ads cheaply and simply\u2026\u2019 Most searches with commercial intent (the ones SMBs want to put their ad on) are not cheap and Google Ads is not a simple platform anymore.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat Google doesn\u2019t say is much more salient. They fail to mention their utter dominance of search, which is where you get search intent data. <\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat advantage, having 80%+ of the internet\u2019s search intent data, is what puts every other piece of Google\u2019s ads tools at a significant advantage against even large competitors like Microsoft. And as long as Google can leverage that search intent data in all their other products, they\u2019ll own this industry.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/digitalsamiam\/\">Sam Tomlinson<\/a>, EVP and Director of Digital Strategy of Warschawski, pointed out several issues with the DOJ\u2019s case:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>He claims this to be an issue with market definition:<\/strong> \u201cHonestly, Google is right on their market definition point. The relevant market should be digital advertising , not some ridiculous thing like \u201cNon-product text based ads\u201d \u2014 it would be absurd to say that Amazon has a monopoly on \u201ceCommerce consumer retail\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>He doesn\u2019t believe it is possible to assess what Google\u2019s fees are:<\/strong> \u201c[It\u2019s] very difficult to assess Google\u2019s fees vs. those charged by others due to the sheer volume of points in the value chain where fees can be added, often in non-transparent ways.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>He thinks SMBs will lose if the DOJ wins SMBs: <\/strong>\u201cEnd result to SMBs? Probably right,\u00a0 to be honest. That\u2019s not what the \u2018Google = evil\u2019 people want to think, but the reality is that breakups would come with massive incremental costs that would be passed onto advertisers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tomlinson said he thinks the system will get healthier if the DOJ wins, but that it will be a painful process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLong run, we\u2019ll probably get a healthier, more transparent ecosystem, but the short term pain to advertisers (and by extension, publishers) is going to be brutal.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines.<\/strong> Google portrays itself as an enabler of the free and open internet, but the DOJ argues its ad tech dominance does the opposite \u2013 it limits choice, increases costs and harms publishers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next. <\/strong>The trial will test whether Google\u2019s defiant claims hold up against the DOJ\u2019s evidence of anticompetitive practices.
