\n A former high-ranking Amazon engineer who quit last month in protest of the company\u2019s treatment of its warehouse workers is calling for it to be broken up.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a virtual meeting held by the Global Amazon Union Alliance, Tim Bray said that the e-commerce juggernaut has its hands in too many industries and that \u201caggressive\u201d antitrust legislation must be passed in order to split it up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy on earth should an online retailer, a cloud computing company, a smart speaker company, an organic supermarket company and a video production company all be conglomerated into one corporate entity controlled by one person?\u201d Bray asked, according to Business Insider.<\/p>\n

He said that AWS \u2014\u00a0Amazon\u2019s cloud computing arm which is the biggest cloud provider in the world and a major driver of revenue for Amazon \u2014\u00a0should not be used to bankroll Amazon\u2019s crushing of \u201cwhole sectors of the retail economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAWS should be an independent company that reports profits and pays taxes on profits,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Bray\u2019s remarks come a month after he made waves by publishing a blog post after quitting where he called Amazon \u201cchickens\u2013t\u201d for firing dissenters in an effort \u201cdesigned to create a climate of fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that listening to worker accounts of what life is like in Amazon\u2019s warehouses during the coronavirus pandemic was difficult to stomach, and that he \u201csnapp<\/a>ed\u201d when they fired the activists.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemaining an Amazon VP would have meant, in effect, signing off on actions I despised,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leaving when he did, Bray said, meant abandoning nearly $1 million in salary and vesting shares.<\/p>\n

Shares of Amazon were down 3 percent Thursday afternoon, at $2,567.02.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
