{"id":638376,"date":"2024-09-15T07:22:19","date_gmt":"2024-09-15T04:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/toronto-why-rebel-wilson-will-only-direct-musicals\/"},"modified":"2024-09-15T07:22:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-15T04:22:19","slug":"toronto-why-rebel-wilson-will-only-direct-musicals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/toronto-why-rebel-wilson-will-only-direct-musicals\/","title":{"rendered":"#Toronto: Why Rebel Wilson Will Only Direct Musicals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Pitch Perfect<\/em> actress Rebel Wilson directed, produced and starred in <em>The Deb<\/em>, an Australian musical comedy that had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And Wilson, who was on hand for a post-screening Q&amp;A at Roy Thomson Hall for TIFF\u2019s closing night film, explained why her next directorial efforts will only be musicals. \u201cWhen I was a teenager, it was a pretty dark time, and I got to see a musical at 14 years of age, because my dog auditioned for it,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The dog didn\u2019t get the gig, but Wilson got hooked on musicals. \u201cI saw these people dancing and singing on stage, they were so colorful and joyful, and that really helped me through my teenage years,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Wilson said she\u2019s had two offers to direct musicals in the near future. \u201cThat\u2019s why, if I\u2019m directing more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>, it\u2019ll only be musicals and bringing joy and positivity to people,\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>The Deb <\/em>is a musical comedy set in rural Australia, and is produced by Amanda Ghost, Len Blavatnik\u00a0and Gregor Cameron via their company Unigram\u00a0and sister company AI Film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Adapted from of the original stage musical of the same name, <em>The Deb\u00a0<\/em>was produced in partnership with Rebel Wilson\u2019s Camp Sugar Productions and Australian producer Bunya Productions. The comedy\u00a0follows lovable farm girl and high school outcast Taylah Simpkins, played by Natalie Abbott, who is certain the upcoming Debutante Ball, or \u201cthe Deb,\u201d is her one chance for a makeover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But when her cynical city cousin Maeve (Charlotte MacInnes) is exiled to Taylah\u2019s drought-stricken town Dunburn, she thinks the ball is regressive and disrupts the status quo. But in their search for the spotlight, Taylah and Maeve dig deep to find self-acceptance, and a date to the Deb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Wilson told the TIFF audience the idea to direct her own movie came as she worked on Universal and Working Title\u2019s adaptation of\u00a0<em>Cats<\/em>, with the Australian actor playing as part of song and dance numbers Jennyanydots in the feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI went up to the director and said, \u2018I\u2019m just not sure you\u2019re doing it right,\u2019 and a female producer who\u2019d witnessed the exchange came over to me and said I think you should direct a movie one day,\u201d she remembered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    At first Wilson wasn\u2019t convinced the director\u2019s chair was for her, but when she chose to attempt a directorial debut, she looked for inspiration to Australian classic movies like\u00a0<em>Muriel\u2019s Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI thought, well, if I\u2019m going to do a movie, it has to be Australian, it has to have a koala and it has to feature plenty of bush,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Toronto Film Festival wraps on Sept. 15. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
