Early on, we saw some signs of life for sites hit by the infamous\u00a0September 2023 helpful content update. But honestly, most of those sites did not see enough traffic rebound to make enough of a dent to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>While the August core update felt really big for us, Google told us the March 2024 core update was there largest core update ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ranking bug.\u00a0<\/strong>The first four or so days of the August core update, we also had a\u00a0big search ranking bug\u00a0that was\u00a0fixed 4 days later. So, you should disregard any movement you saw during those first four days or so. You should compare the rankings and traffic you have seen from Google this week, going forward, compare to the weeks prior to the release of the August core update.<\/p>\n<p>So this is a big caveat with all this data. So much so that Moz was unable to send us data or a statement because they were unable to separate out the ranking bug from the core update, a spokesperson told me.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-data-providers-on-the-google-august-2024-core-update\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_providers_on_the_Google_August_2024_core_update\"><\/span>Data providers on the Google August 2024 core update<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>SimilarWeb.\u00a0<\/strong>SimilarWeb\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/serp\/\">SERP Seismometer<\/a>\u00a0reported a massive spike in SERP ranking fluctuations, as you can see from this chart:<\/p>\n<figure average fluctuation level of 4.48 in global ranking changes, according to Sistrix. \u201cThis represents the highest fluctuation level observed since 2021,\u201d Shay Harel from Sistrix told me.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a chart showing that \u2013 you will notice that the March 2024 core update is missing \u2013 as they did not run the numbers for that update.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image ranking fluctuations in the top three, five, and ten results for the November 2023 and August 2024 updates, Similarweb showed that the top three and top five results showed similar levels of ranking fluctuations between updates, the August update exhibited substantially lower levels of fluctuations in the top ten results.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" niche\/industry, showing that the retail space experienced the highest fluctuations in the top three results, while the health niche had the lowest. \u201cThis trend continued when examining the top five results, with health maintaining the lowest fluctuation levels. In fact, \u201cthe\u00a0peak volatility\u00a0seen with the August\u00a0update was significantly higher than back in March,\u201d according to Mordy Oberstein who put this data together for Semrush. Note, Mordy did our March 2024 core update analysis a few months back.  But when you break it down, \u201cin terms of the severity of the movement the March and August updates are seemingly in the same range,\u201d Mordy Oberstein added.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was, the peak volatility leading up to the August 2024 core update was more than double the volatility leading up to the March 2024 core update. But again, keep in mind that the starting volatility was higher. volatility change comparison by niche when comparing March to August you actually see less volatility during the update for some verticals compared to the baseline period. <\/p>\n<figure some movement\u00a0for the first time with some (not all) sites hit by that update. a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-august-2024-core-update-impact-poll-results-37989.html\">recent poll I ran<\/a>\u00a0showed that most who took the poll were negatively impacted by the last core update:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>44% said My Rankings\/Traffic Are Down (total votes 1,583)<\/li>\n<li>27% said My Rankings\/Traffic Are Up (total votes 993)<\/li>\n<li>29% said No Change (total votes 1,038)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, it seems like while we saw some recoveries from the September helpful content in 2023, that was only for a few sites and limited recoveries. Most sites did not see significant or meaningful recoveries, from what we can tell. And even more sites saw even more declines or just stayed the same.<\/p>\n<p>I should note, the volatility in the Google Search results <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-search-ranking-volatility-heated-38051.html\">has not calmed down<\/a>. We are seeing all sorts of movement, even through today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Google said about the August core update.\u00a0<\/strong>John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2024\/08\/august-2024-core-update\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0when the update was originally released.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cToday, we launched our August 2024 core update to Google Search. This update is designed to continue our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google said this update aims to promote useful content from small and independent publishers, after Google listened to feedback it received since the release of the\u00a0March 2024 core update. Mueller added:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThis latest update takes into account the feedback we\u2019ve heard from some creators and others over the past few months. As always, we aim to connect people with a range of high quality sites, including \u2018small\u2019 or \u2018\u201c\u2019independent\u2019 sites that are creating useful, original content on relevant searches. This is an area we\u2019ll continue to address in future updates.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This August 2024 core update \u201caims to better capture improvements that sites may have made, so we can continue to surface the best of the web,\u201d Mueller added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidance updated.<\/strong>\u00a0Google posted several updates to its\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates\/core-updates\">help page about core updates<\/a>, including more in-depth guidance for those who may see changes after an update.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous core updates.\u00a0<\/strong>The previous core update \u2013 the\u00a0March 2024 core update\u00a0\u2013 was the largest core update, according to Google. It started March 5 and\u00a0completed 45 days later\u00a0on April 19.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a timeline and our coverage of recent core updates:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0March 2024 core update\u00a0was on March 5th and ended on\u00a0April 19.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0November 2023 core update\u00a0was on November 2nd and ended on\u00a0November 28.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0October 2023 core update\u00a0was on October 5th and ended on\u00a0October 19<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0August 2023 core update\u00a0was on August 22nd and ended on\u00a0September 7.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0March 2023 core update\u00a0was on March 15th and\u00a0ended on March 28th.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0September 2022 broad core update\u00a0was\u00a0less impactful\u00a0than previous core updates and finished on\u00a0Sept. 26.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0May 2022 broad core update\u00a0was a\u00a0significant and fast\u00a0update.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0November 2021 core update\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0July 2021 core update.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0June 2021 core update,\u00a0which was\u00a0slow to roll out but a big one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to do if you are hit.\u00a0<\/strong>Google has\u00a0given advice\u00a0on what to consider if you are negatively impacted by a core update in the past. Google has not really given much new advice here.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There aren\u2019t specific actions to take to recover. A negative rankings impact may not signal anything is wrong with your pages.<\/li>\n<li>Google has offered a list of\u00a0questions to consider if your site is hit by a core update.<\/li>\n<li>Google said you can see a bit of a\u00a0recovery between core updates\u00a0but the biggest change would be after another core update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, write helpful content for people and not to rank in search engines.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they\u2019ve been making satisfying content meant for people. If your site was hit by this past update, it can be devastating. If you were hit by previous updates and so no improvement with this update, then again, devastating once again.
