They\u2019re also responsible for<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2024\/02\/harnessing-waste-energy-data-centres\/\"> 1%<\/a> of global energy-related emissions. By 2030, their power demand could increase by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/AI-poised-to-drive-160-increase-in-power-demand\">160%<\/a>. Switzerland-based Lightium aims to provide a solution.<\/p>\n<p>The young startup announced today it has raised $7mn in seed funding to both accelerate the performance of data centres and reduce their energy consumption with a next generation of photonic chips.<\/p>\n<p>Data centres are essentially large clusters of three components: Central Processing Units (CPUs), Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), and optical interconnects that transmit data between these processors.<\/p>\n<p>These interconnects are typically based on silicon semiconductors and account for between 10% and 40% of a data centre\u2019s energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditional semiconductor technologies, which have served us well for decades, are now hitting physical and operational limits,\u201d Dirk Englund, MIT professor and co-founder of Lightium, told TNW.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<p class=\"channel-cta-title\">The <\/p>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TFNL_photonic_chips\"><\/span>TFNL photonic chips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lightium\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), a glass-like material which, according to the startup, overcomes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mri.psu.edu\/mri\/news\/articles-semiconductors\/thanks-silicon-now-need-better\">silicon\u2019s limitations<\/a> and can deliver faster transmission rates of 1.6 or 3.2Tb\/s. That\u2019s compared to the current maximum rate of 800Gb\/s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor large-scale data centre operators, the leap [in transmission rates] means handling more data and doing so more efficiently,\u201d said Englund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis translates into reduced operational costs and significant energy savings,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>TFLN is one of the most complex materials to process, and up until now, its use has been confined to prototyping within academic and R&amp;D settings. This makes Lightium the first company to design and manufacture TFLN-based photonic chips at an industrial scale.<\/p>\n<p><span>Vsquared Ventures and Lakestar led the $7mn funding round. With the fresh capital, the Swiss startup will work towards the commercialisation of its production-grade TFLN Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) foundry services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"\" class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\/><span>Lightium expects to hit this launch target at the beginning of 2025. It\u2019s currently running a closed beta pilot with strategic partners. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers using the companys\u2019 platform will be able to scale up photonics capabilities from prototyping to large-volume manufacturing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The next step will be integrating the technology across a number of sectors, such as satellite communications and quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>According to Englund, a key benefit of TFLN chips is their potential to reduce Europe\u2019s reliance on traditional semiconductor supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital sovereignty is becoming existential for nations or groups of nations.
