As his eyes adjust to the pink and red lights washing over the bandstand, he sees Liz Selfish stalking the stage like a lioness circling her prey, punctuating her pursuit with cheer kicks and burlesque shimmies. There\u2019s a moment of aural confusion, too: Is that Britney Spears\u2019s \u201cToxic\u201d playing through the PA? Before he\u2019s had time to process it all, the synth violins dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear into blast beats and pulverizing guitar, and Selfish replaces the sweet seduction of Spears\u2019s vocal line with her own hellacious growls. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264272\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            This aesthetic, dubbed \u201cBimboviolence\u201d by the New Orleans band, is polarizing by design, demanding respect and disregarding those unwilling to give it. He puts almost as much thought into these as he does his actual drumming \u2014 which is tight, explosive, and metronome accurate. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a process,\u201d he says. \u201cTempo matching, energy matching\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI have a lot of opinions on the samples, too, because this is my area of expertise,\u201d Selfish cuts in.<\/p>\n<p>            A product of early pandemic boredom, BRAT formed in New Orleans in winter \u201920\u2013\u201921, when Moate and Selfish \u2014 romantic partners since before the band\u2019s formation \u2014 were singing karaoke at home. \u201cI was doing an A Day To Remember song,\u201d Selfish says, \u201cand I tried to do the lows, and it actually sounded pretty good, so we were like, \u2018Yo, let\u2019s just start a band.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Building on this initial premise, they recruited Hennessy (Moate\u2019s bandmate in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/cikadadoom.bandcamp.com\/\">Cikada<\/a>), and Eagan, who had just moved to the city from the bayou town where he and Moate both spent their formative years. Their sound \u2014 a pummeling but playful take on powerviolence and grindcore \u2014 swam into focus naturally. They\u2019ve just played their final set of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/summerslaughter\/?hl=en\">Summer Slaughter<\/a>, a month-long touring festival for which they\u2019ve just caravanned with seven other bands behind the bus of its headliners, Chicago metalcore outfit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/veilofmayaband.com\/\">Veil of Maya<\/a>. \u201cA tour like this is a grind,\u201d Hennessy says. \u201cEverything is part of a machine, and if you\u2019re not part of the machine, it\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            We\u2019re actually in Veil of Maya\u2019s green room \u2014 a separate, more private space next to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> one \u2014 but other acts still wander through from time to time. Most are friendly, though one guy looks at me suspiciously and comments on the length of our interview before walking into the bathroom and growling at himself in the mirror without closing the door.<\/p>\n<p>            Summer Slaughter been an arduous run \u2014 BRAT\u2019s hardest tour yet, they tell me \u2014 and they\u2019re happy to be headed homeward, despite the brutal humidity that awaits them back in New Orleans. Moate will return to his family\u2019s machine shop, where he now sells the parts he used to make; Hennessy will pick up what A\/V production shifts he can during the notoriously slow season; and Eagan will sweat it out in restaurant kitchens. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI\u2019m cooking, sweating, and I live in an old-ass shotgun house that\u2019s poorly insulated, so I go home and I\u2019m sweating, too,\u201d he tells me. \u201cSummer is really miserable, so touring \u2014 leaving \u2014 is pretty much the only way to beat it.\u201d When I catch BRAT a month later at TV Eye in Ridgewood, Queens, they all seem happy to be back on the road.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264279\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BRAT - SOCIAL GRACE (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l5YqrJfPvB8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('264279');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264278\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Louisiana\u2019s notoriously grueling summers have inspired some of the most pungent metal to ever offend the listening public, with legendary sludge bands like Eyehategod, Crowbar, Exhorder, and Acid Bath capturing the essence of life at the fringes of a sinking world. BRAT\u2019s music \u2014 fast, thrashing, decidedly unsloppy \u2014 is as far from sludge as it gets (within the confines of metal), especially with the top-40 tracks thrown into the mix.<\/p>\n<p>            Still, they play tribute to the genre on \u201cSlow Heat,\u201d a centerpiece of their live set and of their March 2024 debut album, <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/brat504.bandcamp.com\/album\/social-grace-2\">Social Grace<\/a><\/i>. Though only two minutes long, its shifting tempo and the towering intensity of Moate and Hennessy\u2019s central riff make it feel colossal. The song is set in New Orleans, but the scenery might as well be hell. \u201cSame difference!\u201d they reply, almost in unison, when I ask them to compare the two locations.<\/p>\n<p>            Elsewhere on the LP, they\u2019re all sharp edges and high octane. Bookended by the pure catharsis of opener \u201cEgo Death\u201d and the slowly evaporating constraint of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Grace,\u201d the 10-track project is a show of force but also of rigorous technicality and sharp production sensibilities. The thing about this band is not liking what you\u2019re expected to like. We can play grind and also dance to Britney Spears.
