I am tracking revenue, not profit. So Performance Max maximizes my revenue\u201d<br \/>Me:\u00a0 \u201cNope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You: \u201cUhh, OK, then it must be conversions<br \/>Me:\u00a0 \u201cNo, again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You: \u201cWhat? What else is there? Clicks then?\u201d<br \/>Me: \u201cNo, no, no!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You: \u201cWTF?!\u201d<br \/>Me: \u201cIt\u2019s spend. Ad spend. Performance Max maximizes your ad spend, as long as you let it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you are 100% convinced the last statement is complete BS, you can stop reading now. The rest of this article won\u2019t bring you much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If, however, you are like me and you think it\u2019s an interesting hypothesis worth testing and letting the data speak for itself, then read on. This might be of interest to you.<\/p>\n<p>And if you are already convinced it is true, then this is your lucky day because we\u2019ve got some interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>s to help prevent Performance Max from wasting your money.<\/p>\n<p>What follows are three scripts taken from my latest SMX Advanced presentation. Use these scripts to your advantage and be sure to watch the full video of the session (at bottom of this article).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-script-1-negate-non-converting-performance-max-search-terms-nbsp-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Script_1_Negate_non-converting_Performance_Max_search_terms\"><\/span>Script 1: Negate non-converting Performance Max search terms\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Performance Max excels at reporting averages, such as the average spend per day, conversion rate and campaign ROAS.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not good at reporting the actual performance of individual search terms.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you can go to the Google Ads interface, click <em>Insights and Reports<\/em>, navigate the search category report and click around like a rabbit on speed. But it\u2019s clumsy, to say the least!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to find search terms that waste money in your Performance Max campaigns. <\/p>\n<p>The terms themselves are hard to find in the interface, and the performance of bad actors is hidden in the campaign averages.<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be nice to have a list that clearly shows the search terms with poor performance?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You could easily decide what to do with them (e.g., fix asset groups\/landing pages) or add them as negative keywords to your Performance Max campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, we can use scripts to create such a list for us. All is well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, for some reason, the two top-performing products in your campaign, which are responsible for more than 40% of the revenue, get disapproved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What do you think will happen?<\/p>\n<p>Performance Max has delivered great results in the past and thinks it can still do so today and tomorrow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the disapproved products are out, and Performance Max has to (re)discover new clicks that perform at least as well as the clicks on these disapproved products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This learning phase involves a lot of trial and error, testing new kinds of clicks, most probably with a lot of clicks that do not convert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A lot of waste, unless you take action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You could, for instance, use seasonality adjustment to indicate lower expected conversion rates until you get the top products re-approved. <\/p>\n<p>Or you could decrease the budget to prevent excessive spending with low returns in the short run.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not act when top-performing products get disapproved, you probably waste spend.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I created a script to alert you when products that receive significant clicks (or conversions) are disapproved.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Link to script<\/em><\/strong><em>: <\/em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nilsrooijmans.com\/google-ads-script-disapproved-products-alerts\/\"><em>Google Ads Script \u2013 Disapproved Products Alerts<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-script-3-exclude-spammy-placements\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Script_3_Exclude_spammy_placements\"><\/span>Script 3: Exclude spammy placements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Did you know there is a report called <em>Performance Max campaigns placement<\/em>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is located in the Template gallery of the Report editor. <\/p>\n<p>The report shows what placements on the Google Display Network (GDN) generated impressions for your Performance Max campaigns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1062\" height=\"570\" alt=\"Performance Max campaigns placement\" class=\"wp-image-446739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement.png.webp 1062w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-600x322.png.webp 600w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-800x429.png.webp 800w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-200x107.png.webp 200w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-768x412.png.webp 768w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1062px) 100vw, 1062px\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement.png.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1062\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement.png.webp\" alt=\"Performance Max campaigns placement\" class=\"wp-image-446739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement.png.webp 1062w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-600x322.png.webp 600w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-800x429.png.webp 800w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-200x107.png.webp 200w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/09\/Performance-Max-campaigns-placement-768x412.png.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1062px) 100vw, 1062px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, again, the report is not that easy to find. <\/p>\n<p>It only shows the number of impressions \u2013 no click data, no conversion data.
