you\u2019re likely to land on something Mica Levi has touched in some way. Prolific as a producer, a collaborator, a film scorer, a solo artist, and the leader of Good Bad H<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y Sad (fka Micachu and the Shapes), they\u2019ve quietly amassed a deep catalog of warped, discomfiting tunes over the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264308\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spresso1.bandcamp.com\/\">Spresso<\/a> \u2014 Levi\u2019s duo with fellow London experimentalist Leisha Thomas (aka <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alpha_maid\/?hl=en\">Alpha Maid<\/a>), who turned heads in 2021 with an excellent EP called <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/canvas-index.bandcamp.com\/album\/chuckle\">CHUCKLE<\/a><\/i> \u2014 arrived unceremoniously last May. Their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spresso1.bandcamp.com\/album\/spresso\">self-titled debut joint tape<\/a>, scrappy and virtually unpromoted (like most of Levi\u2019s work), is a sampler of the fuzzed-out, jagged-edged, ultra-brief guitar tracks they\u2019ve continued to release since.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Skimming the next 16 months of their output \u2014 two more EPs, and now, a 16-track, 18-minute album titled <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i> \u2014 you\u2019ll find only two songs that go significantly past the two-minute mark, and just a small handful with discernible vocals. <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i>, released earlier this week (again without advance notice), contains no such luxuries. Here, Thomas and Levi remain within the bounds of Spresso\u2019s Platonic form: the former shredding lead guitar, the latter behind the boards, disturbing these lashing chord progressions with subtly unsettled production.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264309\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2015674310\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spresso1.bandcamp.com\/album\/pretty-penny-slur\">Pretty Penny Slur by Spresso<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264310\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i> fades in on the slow, grungy power chords of \u201cOnce an olympic star fainted in the tournament,\u201d underscored only by a detuned, flatulent bass line, before stumbling into the more sure-footed \u201cit badly hurt their shoulder,\u201d where industrial percussion bashes in to drive the track toward its conclusion with the menace of a Melvins intro.<\/p>\n<p>            From there, the punk gets thrashier and the sounds get thinner, as if Levi is rolling them out like pasta on a counter or processing them through a broken black hole. Each track finds the duo operating at maximum efficiency, discarding any potential filler on the kitchen floor or in a trash heap of cosmic detritus.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264311\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/0ZTpwq0VE4ZqsoO2n3ao9E?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264312\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            It\u2019s worth noting that <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i>\u2019s tracklist can be read as a short story. Its synopsis is as follows: A star athlete sustains a career-ending injury, attempts to start a second career in porn, has a passionate affair with the wife of a wealthy man, turns to crime to pay for top surgery, gets caught, is betrayed by their paramour, and flees south. This Calvino-esque table of contents is rendered in the third person, except on track 12, \u201cand called the police on me,\u201d wherein Spresso hint that our desperate, lovelorn former Olympian has been them the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>            An analysis of <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i> through this plot line could yield interesting results but is entirely unnecessary to appreciate the project. Even the dissection of the piece into sixteen distinct fragments is only helpful in the abstract, creating mile markers for the restless mind. As a listener, it\u2019s best experienced straight through, without such distractions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            About a third of the way into the album, after the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IxsUGOQm6qQ\">Third Uncle<\/a>\u201d-style joy ride of \u201cthey started a relationship with a millionaires wife,\u201d the record returns from its agitated state to its slower, sludgier roots, but there\u2019s tension in the slightly unsynced slacker rhythms and dissonant melodies that bring the album past its halfway point.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cand called the police on me\u201d describes a transitional period in the project, expressing a state of uncertainty through a slippery, shifting pulse. Then we\u2019re back in the thick of the action, cantankerous drumming pushing us into a panic. There\u2019s some disquieted rest to be found on the album\u2019s penultimate track, \u201cinsomnia,\u201d but its 13-second closer, \u201ccash converters,\u201d returns us to chaos and ends abruptly, like a sentence cut off by an em dash. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264313\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe allow=\"autoplay *; encrypted-media *;\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"450\" style=\"width:100%;max-width:660px;overflow:hidden;background:transparent;\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-storage-access-by-user-activation allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.music.apple.com\/us\/album\/pretty-penny-slur\/1768289702\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264315\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <i>Pretty Penny Slur<\/i> is easily Spresso\u2019s most fully realized universe yet, but it provides little in the way of resolution. It can feel at times like an incomplete thought or a half-baked plan, one that comes tantalizingly close to locking into place but never quite gets there.
