Google <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates#spam-policy-clarifications\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cWe review and refresh our documentation periodically. This update is part of that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is new. <\/strong> The big change is that Google added a new section to the site reputation abuse policy, that section reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n\u201cClose oversight or involvement is when the first-party hosting site is directly producing or generating unique content (for example, via staff directly employed by the first-party, or freelancers working for staff of the first-party site). It is not working with third-party services (such as \u201cwhite-label\u201d or \u201cturnkey\u201d) that focus on redistributing content with the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other changes are less noticeable and you can compare the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/essentials\/spam-policies\">live version<\/a> to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240923020214\/https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/essentials\/spam-policies\">archived version here<\/a>. The changes include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Updated the introductory paragraph<\/li>\n<li>Link spam definition was updated<\/li>\n<li>Machine-generated traffic (also called automated traffic)\u00a0section was updated<\/li>\n<li>Misleading functionality section updated and expanded<\/li>\n<li>Scraping section simplified <\/li>\n<li>Plus other changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google wrote that they have \u201cclarified some wording in our\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/essentials\/spam-policies\">spam policies for Google web search<\/a>\u00a0to focus more on what web spam is and the tactics involved.\u201d They \u201calso integrated an\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2024\/03\/core-update-spam-policies#coupons\">explanation of close involvement<\/a>\u00a0from our blog post for easier reference, and clarified that trying to circumvent our policies can also result in ranking lower or not at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care. <\/strong>Some believe that when Google makes updates to its search policies, penalties or new algorithmic actions or manual actions make soon follow.  This may or may not be the case.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, it is important to stay up on the latest documentation changes Google makes, especially around its search policies.
