{"id":639789,"date":"2024-09-27T20:55:32","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T17:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/us-government-charges-three-iranian-hackers-with-trump-campaign-hack\/"},"modified":"2024-09-27T20:55:32","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T17:55:32","slug":"us-government-charges-three-iranian-hackers-with-trump-campaign-hack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/us-government-charges-three-iranian-hackers-with-trump-campaign-hack\/","title":{"rendered":"#US government charges three Iranian hackers with Trump campaign hack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Department of Justice announced criminal charges against three hackers working for Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), accusing the trio of a four-year-long hacking campaign that included this year\u2019s hack of Donald Trump\u2019s presidential campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, U.S. prosecutors <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25177013-us-v-iranian-hackers\">published an indictment<\/a> accusing Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, and Yasar (Yaser) Balaghi of targeting the Trump campaign, former White House and senior government officials, and members of Congress, as part of a hack-and-leak operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the indictment, the operation was launched in part in retaliation for the killing of Iranian <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> Qasem Soleimani by the Trump administration in 2020, for which the Iranian government vowed revenge. U.S. officials have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/member-irans-islamic-revolutionary-guard-corps-irgc-charged-plot-murder-former-national\">since charged at least one individual<\/a> with the attempted assassination of John Bolton, a former National Security Advisor, as part of the wider Iranian effort to target former members of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a press conference Friday that the Iranian hacking campaign was in part aimed at influencing the upcoming 2024 presidential election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe defendant\u2019s own words make clear that they were attempting to undermine former President Trump\u2019s campaign in advance of the 2024 U.S. presidential election,\u201d said Garland. \u201cWe know that Iran is continuing its brazen efforts to stoke discord, erode confidence in the U.S. electoral process and advance its malign activities to the IRGC, a designated foreign terrorist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese authoritarian regimes which violate the human rights of their own citizens do not get a say in our country\u2019s democratic process,\u201d said Garland. \u201cThe American people and the American people alone will decide the outcome of our country\u2019s elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1523\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/iranian-hackers-indicted-trump-hack_7e843f.png\" alt=\"Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, and Yasar (Yaser) Balaghi, the three Iranian hackers indicted for a hacking campaign that included the intrusion against the Donald Trump presidential campaign. Politico reported that an individual going by the name \u201cRobert\u201d had reached out and shared documents that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to have been stolen from the Republican candidate\u2019s camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the beginning, the story had the hallmarks of a hack-and-leak operation, akin to what the Russian government orchestrated in 2016, after hacking the Democratic National Committee and people connected to the Hillary Clinton campaign. Unlike 2016, however, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> organizations decided to not report on the content of the documents, let alone release them. Instead, the reporters focused on the fact that the files had been stolen and leaked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kevin Collier, a journalist at NBC News, who said he has seen some of the documents, said the files did not contain much worth writing about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt least half a dozen outlets and independent reporters have received hacked Trump files from \u2018Robert,\u2019 a front for Iranian intelligence. To date, no reporter who\u2019s seen them has found news in them,\u201d Collier <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kevincollier\/status\/1839353083782189084\">wrote on X on Thursday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten days after Politico\u2019s report, the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA released a joint statement accusing the government of Iran of being behind the hack-and-leak operation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe [Intelligence Community] is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the presidential campaigns of both political parties. Such activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/joint-odni-fbi-and-cisa-statement-on-iranian-election-influence-efforts\">read the statement<\/a>. \u201cIt is important to note that this approach is not new. Iran and Russia have employed these tactics not only in the United States during this and prior federal election cycles but also in other countries around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2024\/08\/08\/iran-targeting-2024-us-election\/\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/threat-analysis-group\/iranian-backed-group-steps-up-phishing-campaigns-against-israel-us\/\">Google<\/a> also accused Iranian government-backed hackers of being behind the targeting of people affiliated with both the Trump and the Biden campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, more than a month after the first report saying journalists had the documents, independent journalist Ken Klippenstein <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kenklippenstein.com\/p\/read-the-jd-vance-dossier\">published a 271-page dossier<\/a> on Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance. Klippenstein wrote that since June, \u201cthe news media has been sitting on it (and other documents), declining to publish in fear of finding itself at odds with the government\u2019s campaign against \u2018foreign malign influence.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI disagree.
