But the 23-year-old rapper born Leondra Gay has always been candid about her mental health in songs and interviews, from shaking with fear during church choir performances as a child to surviving multiple suicide attempts in her teens. And 2023 was a busy year for Leo: Her debut album, <i>Where the Flowers Don\u2019t Die<\/i>, arrived just days after the birth of her son. Another artist might cut themselves some professional slack, but Monaleo holds herself to an exactingly high standard. I wanted something that was going to cut through,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd my ideas cut through. So it\u2019s like, \u201cOK, I\u2019m wasting a lot of energy being anxious, and the chances of this going right are really high.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            In conversation, Monaleo is charismatic and considered, biting her tongue a couple times to make sure she phrases her point precisely. \u201cI kept having to remind myself there\u2019s really no wrong answer with making music,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gave me a bit of wiggle room to try shit and experiment. When you go into these freestyles, are you approaching them differently based on the audience or platform?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            <b>Monaleo:<\/b> That [Power 106] L.A. Leakers freestyle was so difficult for me. I wanted to cancel it because I was so stressed, because I felt like, \u201cThis is such a big platform, and if I go on here and I don\u2019t really deliver, I\u2019m gonna do myself a disservice, and I\u2019d rather come back when I feel like I\u2019m ready.\u201d I really, really, really wanted to do it so bad that I didn\u2019t want to do it. I don\u2019t know if that makes sense. I was so excited for it I almost felt like I could not go. I was paralyzed with anxiety. The day before, I didn\u2019t have anything, and I was like, \u201cMan, what am I gonna do?\u201d I\u2019m gonna walk in here and [look bad by comparison] because a lot of people pre-write their verses.<\/p>\n<p>            But I\u2019m so glad that I did it, and I did it in one take. That\u2019s just insane, to be that paralyzed with fear and then to go and do it in one take. I really do believe the only person in my way sometimes is me. But when I go to these platforms, I know there\u2019s a certain type of demographic they reach, so I want to make sure to\u2026 not pander, but cater to the audience that I\u2019m performing to.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>How were things feeling for you before you started recording <i>Throwing Bows<\/i>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            My life was kind of slowed down [\u2026] Music was the last thing I was thinking about, honestly.<\/p>\n<p>            You read articles that aren\u2019t favorable, you read comments that aren\u2019t favorable, you read tweets that aren\u2019t favorable. You get in your head like that, and it starts to seep into your fucking bloodstream. Before you know it, you go in the booth to record, [and] you\u2019re discouraged. That\u2019s where I was at, and I wanted to remind myself this shit ain\u2019t even [that serious]\u2026<\/p>\n<p>            I think my position is serious, and my impact is serious,and  my reach is serious. The interactions that I have with people are serious. Music is definitely very serious, but in terms of a profession, I\u2019m not a doctor. I don\u2019t physically save people\u2019s lives. I might emotionally put people in a better state and inadvertently save their lives. You\u2019re covering a lot of different stylistic ground here.<br \/><\/b><br \/>I don\u2019t really trust anybody\u2019s ear like I trust my own ear, so it\u2019s a very tedious process. It\u2019s actually very annoying, if I\u2019m being completely honest. It\u2019s redundant: You sit in the studio and you listen to the same 50 beats in a row and it\u2019s just like, \u201cOh my fucking God.\u201d We were wasting <i>so<\/i> much time. spending damn near whole studio sessions going through beats that I hate. So I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright, I wanna be involved in this beat-making process. I want you to take my vision from scratch, and let\u2019s just build it [so] we\u2019re cutting straight to what I like and what I want.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Tell me about some of the songs you worked on from scratch with the producers.<br \/><\/b><br \/>There\u2019s a song on there called \u201cQueen and Slime\u201d by me and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#FF69B4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stunna4vegas\/?hl=en\">Stunna [4 Vegas]<\/a>. That was born from an idea that I had. I wanted to sample \u201cI\u2019m Broken\u201d by Pantera. I heard it years ago \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#FF69B4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P_-2hs4TSbQ&amp;ab_channel=Spectro%27sRockHero\">I think it was <i>Guitar Hero<\/i>?<\/a> \u2014 and it always stuck out to me. I haven\u2019t played that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> in 10-plus years, and to this day, I remember doing a deep dive and looking into their discography because I\u2019m like, \u201cMan, I fuck with this. I don\u2019t know what this is about, but I love it.\u201d It really spoke to me. I\u2019m so glad I thought about it randomly and was like, \u201cMan, I wanna hear this, but in a hip-hop way.\u201d In addition to it being a crazy-ass rock song, I want to bring it into my world.<\/p>\n<p>            There was another song on there that we had to take off because we could not get it cleared, but it was called \u201cChipotle\u201d and it had a <i>Rick and Morty<\/i> sample. Obviously I love <i>Rick and Morty<\/i>, and I like the theme song \u2014 the instruments really bleed out. I\u2019m so sad we couldn\u2019t make that happen, but it\u2019s alright. I grew up listening to their music. I\u2019m from Mo City, so we played a lot of their music at our parties. That was something for younger me, little Leo. It\u2019s so Texas. It really is just Deep South, fun, party music.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Speaking of regional party music, I was looking back at some of your older features and saw that you did a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#FF69B4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mx21fAcIUxc\">song with Propain and Beatking<\/a>. I wanted to ask about Beatking\u2019s recent passing.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s super unfortunate. He was a force to be reckoned with in our community. I grew up in Houston, so his music was the soundtrack to my childhood, essentially. I\u2019d be in the car just listening, and it would come on 97.9 The Box.<\/p>\n<p>            Certain people you just don\u2019t expect to die. He\u2019s so big \u2014 physically, but also just personality-wise. He\u2019s huge. He really takes up space in the room. I felt like Beatking was going to be posting an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#FF69B4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C89XdAhgTFW\/?hl=en\">Impact font t-shirt<\/a> every day for the rest of my life until <i>I<\/i> die.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It reminds you of the mortality of the people around you. I always live in that space because I went to school for mortuary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>, so I saw a lot of dead bodies [and] I dealt with death on a consistent basis. That just shifted my mind. <\/p>\n<p>            Not to be morbid, but we all will die. And I think if we keep that in mind, the way we treat people will be so much different. If we knew that the person we were talking to could die tomorrow, we might say whatever we want to say and get shit off of our chest.
