\n John Ashton, known for playing John Taggert in Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> and two sequels, has died. He was 76.<\/p>\n

\n Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a brief battle with cancer, his manager, Alan Somers, told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n Ashton\u2019s Detective Sergeant Taggart app<\/a>eared in the first two Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> movies<\/a> in 1984 and 1987 alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. He returned as the character \u2014 now promoted to police chief \u2014 in 2024\u2019s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n Ashton also appeared in films and TV shows that spanned more than a half-century, including 1973\u2019s An Eye for an Eye<\/em>, 1974\u2019s So Evil, My Sister<\/em>, 1976\u2019s Cat Murkil and the Silks<\/em>, 1979\u2019s Borderline<\/em> and 1981\u2019s Honky Tonk Freeway<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n More recently, he had roles in 2006\u2019s Sweet Deadly Dreams<\/em>, 2007\u2019s Gone Baby Gone<\/em>, 2009\u2019s Middle Men<\/em> and 2023\u2019s Lonesome Soldier<\/em>. On television, he guest starred on Columb<\/em>o, Police Story, Barnaby Jones <\/em>and M*A*S*H<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n On\u00a0Dallas<\/em>\u00a0in 1978-79, he played Willie Jo Garr, a business associate of JR\u2019s (Larry Hagman) who accidentally causes the death of JR\u2019s former secretary and mistress Julie Gray (Tina Louise).<\/p>\n

\n John David Ashton was born Feb. 22, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents were Edward Richard Ashton Sr. and Eva May Ashton, who raised him in Enfield, Connecticut. He attended Enfield High School and Defiance College before transferring to USC, where he graduated with a BA in theater arts.<\/p>\n

\n Ashton is survived by his sisters, Sharon Ann Ashton (and her husband, Montana State District Judge Kenneth R. Neill) and Linda Jean Ashton, and his brother, Edward Richard (Ann) Ashton Jr.<\/p>\n
