The reason was to welcome the first IBM Heron processor to be installed outside of the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Chancellor of Germany shows up to spend nearly half a day at an event, you know it is a pretty big deal. Indeed, attracting projects like IBM\u2019s new quantum data centre might be what makes or breaks German \u2014 and European \u2014 aspirations on \u201ctechnological sovereignty\u201d in the emerging area of quantum tech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tech giant\u2019s most powerful quantum processor to date, Heron has 156 superconducting physical qubits. While IBM has achieved over 1,000 qubits on the Condor chip unveiled last December, when it comes to qubits, bigger is not always better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe did larger qubits to prove principles of scaling,\u201d Jay Gambetta, VP of IBM Quantum, told TNW. \u201cThe key for the Heron is that now we are focusing on the quality of the gates.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantum gates are basic building blocks of quantum circuits, used to manipulate and control the quantum states of the qubits. Their accuracy directly impacts the overall error rate of a quantum system. Along with solving the problem of reducing error rates, there is also the matter of how fast the circuits can run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur R&amp;D team here is 25 times faster at running circuits because we\u2019ve improved the whole software stack,\u201d Gambetta added. And software, he says, is where the key to pushing even \u201cnoisy\u201d quantum machines into the era of utility \u2014 and business value \u2014 lies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is this great surfacing of new codes in error correction. Using the old codes, people would say you\u2019d need millions of qubits to do anything. But last year, we put out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07107-7\">a paper<\/a> that showed a new code that is 90% more efficient in numbers of qubits.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantum computing, Gambetta said, will begin to have real impact when we discover the right algorithms.\u00a0\u201cAnd that means enabling startups, students, companies to do that type of work that\u2019s only just starting now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enabling_quantum_startup_and_ecosystem_collaboration\"><\/span>Enabling quantum startup and ecosystem collaboration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its algorithmic quest, IBM collaborates not only with universities but also with a number of startups. One of them is Finland\u2019s Algorithmiq, which develops algorithms to integrate quantum computing with classical computing to advance chemistry and life <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s, in particular drug discovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To accomplish this, it needs algorithms \u2014 and scale, says the company\u2019s founder Sabrina Maniscalco, which is why it has partnered with IBM. The startup\u2019s error mitigation algorithm, TEM, is available through the Qiskit (IBM\u2019s open-source software development tool) Functions Catalog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, with more IBM quantum systems available in Europe, we\u2019re excited to further strengthen our ties in Europe and partner with an even larger ecosystem of industries, organisations, developers, and scientists to demonstrate TEM\u2019s utility \u2014 and progress toward quantum advantage,\u201d Maniscalco said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other startups currently partnering with IBM are quantum infrastructure software company Q-CTRL from Australia, and quantum operating system developers QEDMA from Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there may be a universal fault-tolerant system in the future, Gambetta is certain that the utility and business cases for quantum lie in hybrid systems, where quantum computations will run as a very important subroutine. Next year, IBM is installing a quantum computer right next to the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Building_a_new_industry_and_contributing_to_European_quantum_capabilities\"><\/span><strong>\u2018Building a new industry\u2019 and contributing to European quantum capabilities<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That it was Germany and Ehningen that became the chosen location for IBM\u2019s first Heron outside the US is hardly a coincidence. The company has deep connections to the small town in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, and the support from both local and federal governments has been instrumental in deepening the tech giant\u2019s commitment to the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, IBM is looking to position itself as a key player in the growing European quantum ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are building a new industry,\u201d said Dario Gil, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBM senior vice president and director of research. \u201cBringing the highest-performing quantum processor that we\u2019ve ever built here is a commitment to bring the state of the art of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to Germany and to Europe.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe European Commission has defined quantum as one of the four key technologies for Europe to have capabilities on,\u201d said Ana Paula Assis, chairman and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager of IBM Europe, Middle East, and Africa. \u201cAnd what we are doing here, bringing this first [quantum] data center outside of the US to the region, is a testament of our belief that we can contribute significantly to that progress.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also helps that plenty of the company\u2019s prospective quantum solutions clients, for whom the technology can solve complex optimisation problems, are located nearby, such as SAP, E.ON, T-Systems, Bosch, and VW.
