questions effectively, regardless of word count.<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\nContent creation is a beast and can be a minefield, especially in this AI-driven era, where many seek to \u201csave time\u201d by using AI to partially or fully write content, sometimes with little to no human oversight<\/p>\n<p>As guardians of the corpus of the web (it\u2019s scary, but true in many ways), SEO professionals should seriously consider whether the content they\u2019re publishing is valuable, useful, unique and actually answers the user\u2019s question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t always attribute to a specific word count: it should be long enough to answer your customer\u2019s question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I am an advocate for doing everything we can to reduce the amount of AI-generated cruft on the web.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This article explores:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Content length and (potential) misconceptions around it.<\/li>\n<li>Content depth and what that means.<\/li>\n<li>How AI Overviews and LLMs might understand content using specific systems of analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-should-my-content-be-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_long_should_my_content_be\"><\/span>How long should my content be?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your content should be as long as needed to answer the question related to the concept, either implicit or explicit, whether that\u2019s 200 words or 2,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve seen this in the API leak, where it seems that \u201cthin content\u201d is not specifically scored on length but on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/google-algo-leak\">originality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, in a world of semantic search, we should not necessarily ask, \u201cHow long should my content be?\u201d but \u201cHow direct is my answer?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the content you (or your team) create is complicated or full of fluff just to pad the word count, make it more direct.<\/p>\n<p>The fewer \u201chops\u201d there are, the easier it is for Google to do two things:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understand the relationships between what you\u2019re saying.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the explicit focus of what you\u2019re trying to communicate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This might mean changing the purpose or placement of your content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the blog post you\u2019re planning to write might work better as an individual FAQ on a product or category page or as bullet points with product details or another type of formatted list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not everything has to be (or should be) a blog article. This is reinforced by the \u201cOriginalContentScore\u201d in the leaked API docs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-css-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-in-depth-should-my-content-be\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_in-depth_should_my_content_be\"><\/span>How in-depth should my content be?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your content should absolutely be in-depth.<\/p>\n<p>In that same correlation study, Backlinko found that their subset of analyzed pages had a direct correlation to higher rankings the higher the \u201ccontent score\u201d from Clearscope.<\/p>\n<p>Clearscope <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clearscope.io\/support\/articles\/how-does-clearscope-grade-your-content\">states<\/a> they determine your content grade by:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c\u2026scrap[ing] the top-ranking content on the search engine results page (SERP) and calculat[ing] the importance of each term by how much the keyword appears in the competitors\u2019 articles.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that this is almost a self-referential process for defining \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cin-depth\u201d within the already existing set of content that ranks \u2013 it doesn\u2019t account for the unknown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My process for understanding content depth looks to reduce that dependency a bit by changing what we review first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-should-i-understand-content-depth-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_should_I_understand_content_depth\"><\/span>How should I understand content depth?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Content depth is providing all relevant details to fully answer a question while still being clear about the specific answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a prime spot to leverage information gain and provide content that\u2019s a step beyond what\u2019s shared in currently ranking articles \u2013 by not starting with what\u2019s published in currently ranking articles in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I typically follow this process:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Step 1: <\/strong>Speak to my sales and support teams. What questions do customers have about this particular topic or feature when purchasing, onboarding or using it? Am I answering all of those questions in my content?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 2: <\/strong>Review the search results for related queries, looking for People Also Ask elements, related searches and rich <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> or schema-influenced results.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 3: <\/strong>Review the SERP and see if there are any gaps in the competitor set, where they are talking about a specific idea or concept and you\u2019ve yet to include that in your outline or content brief from your research in Steps 1 and 2.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 4: <\/strong>Determine whether any topics have enough content differences to warrant their own article, creating a hub-and-spoke content model.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every industry and brand will have its own thresholds for content depth, so I cannot give you a quantitative, specific definition of what constitutes \u201ccontent depth\u201d in this article.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-the-content-is-out-of-date-or-old\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_if_the_content_is_out-of-date_or_old\"><\/span>What if the content is out-of-date or old?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Content decay is real and something you should consider solving, for both search engines (it was identified as part of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/google-algo-leak\">document leak in May 2024<\/a>) and users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As content becomes more and more out of date, it intrinsically becomes less relevant and no longer actually in-depth or important in a way that\u2019s relevant to customers and searchers today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-passage-ranking\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Passage_ranking\"><\/span>Passage ranking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Passage ranking is one Google system that\u2019s worth understanding, at a base level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/appearance\/ranking-systems-guide\">documentation<\/a> has a single sentence, which describes their passage ranking system as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c\u2026an AI system we use to identify individual sections or \u2018passages\u2019 of a web page to better understand how relevant a page is to a search.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some ways, this makes historical questions around content depth and length arbitrary.<\/p>\n<p>If Google can now pull out and understand sections of the articles we\u2019re writing to feed search results, does it matter how much content is in the overall article?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward with content in an AI-centric world that relies on semantic search, I have a few content touchpoints I come back to:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work with (and create for) people first<\/strong>: Not only is authorship important, but considering qualitative feedback \u2013 and answering that <strong>first<\/strong>, will likely serve you well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Directness over length<\/strong>: Answer the question as succinctly as possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on originality and comprehensiveness<\/strong>: Ideally, remove AI from the actual writing process.
