Lupe Fiasco has finally shared a complete (if concise) history of Child Rebel Soldier, his group with Kanye West and Pharrell that released only a few songs in the late 2000s, but made a huge impact.<\/p>\n

In an interview on\u00a0Sway in the Morning\u00a0<\/em>on Friday (October 4), Lupe broke down what happ<\/a>ened with the group\u2019s 2007 debut single \u201cUs Placers,\u201d all the way up to his recent effort to take back the name this past summer.<\/p>\n

When asked about CRS by Sway, Lupe made clear that he\u2019s still on good terms with Ye and Pharrell, but said that \u201cthe fans feel betrayed\u201d that the group didn\u2019t put out any material beyond two singles and an appearance on N.E.R.D.\u2019s \u201cEverybody Nose\u201d remix.<\/p>\n

He jokingly lamented that \u201cthe two richest n-ggas in the group\u201d were the reason it never continued. \u201cP[\u2018]s eating caviar golden sandwiches, Ye is stitching up two different Rick Owens coats to wear in the shower. I\u2019m trying to corral these two,\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n

That put Lupe in the frame of mind to tell the group\u2019s whole history.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere [was] a lot of fan momentum around it as a movement\u201d following the release of \u201cUs Placers,\u201d he remembered. \u201cWe always talked about [the group, but] it kind of fell to the wayside\u2026 And then again, n-ggas get rich and crazy and shit goes left.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it turned out the crew\u2019s small output of songs made an outsized impact on a new generation of creators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat whole time, it\u2019s incubating with people like Tyler[, the Creator],\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

That gave the CRS guys an idea \u2014 to replace themselves with younger artists.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the talks was like, \u2018Yo, we old n-ggas and rich and doing other shit,’\u201d Lupe recalled. \u201c\u2018Why don\u2019t we just get the dudes who would be us now, and just give them CRS and let them do it? What if CRS was the hip-hop Exile<\/a>?’\u201d<\/p>\n

That idea \u201cwent nowhere,\u201d he said, which led to this year\u2019s effort where Lupe took the Child Rebel Soldier idea back to its initial roots \u2014 him, solo, rapping over Radiohead samples. But when he released material of that ilk, he said, Radiohead \u201csent the biggest cease-and-desist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRadiohead was like, \u2018Fuck all that,’\u201d he said, to uproarious laughter from Sway and company.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried,\u201d Lupe concluded.<\/p>\n

Lupe\u2019s now-vanished-from-YouTube<\/a> attempt to revive CRS was called \u201cShrink.\u201d<\/p>\n

It prominently samples Radiohead\u2019s Kid A<\/em> track \u201cOptimistic,\u201d which is in keeping with the original Child Rebel Soldier ethos of rapping over beats from the iconic British rock band.<\/p>\n

The song also doubles up as further promo for\u00a0Lupe\u2019s Samurai! Tour, which kicks off this month and comes in support of his latest album of the same name.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
