The partners unveiled the first cohort of six startups today. The fledgling companies will now enter a four-month programme that will conclude in Perth, Australia in December.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe understand the vast opportunity ahead in decarbonising and technologically transforming one of the world\u2019s most important industries \u2014 mining,\u201d said Henry Lane Fox, CEO of Founders Factory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The six startups include Denver, US-based Endolith, which uses microbes for a greener way to increase copper recovery from low-grade ores, and Cambridge, UK-headquartered ProSpectural, which is building low-cost spectral cameras that can \u201csee\u201d the composition of materials lying beneath the Earth\u2019s surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cashing-in_on_lithium\"><\/span>Cashing-in on lithium<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s Magmatic, from Austria. As<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a result, the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1421980\/global-lithium-supply-and-demand\/#:~:text=By%202030%2C%20it%20is%20anticipated,estimated%203.1%20million%20metric%20tons.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global demand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for lithium is predicted to more than quadruple by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a trend that hasn\u2019t gon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e unnoticed to the likes of Rio Tinto, the world\u2019s second-largest metals and mining corporation. Today, the British-Australian corporation announced the acquisition of Ireland-based Arcadium Lithium, a lithium producer born in January from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allkem-Livent <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/allkem-shareholders-approve-106-bln-livent-lithium-merger-2023-12-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said the acquisition would allow the firm to create a \u201cworld-class lithium business alongside our leading aluminium and copper operations to supply materials needed for the energy transition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The push into the lithium business comes as Rio tries to make its mining operations \u2014 marred by a poor <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/rio-tinto-quebec-amazon-bauxite-aluminum-1.7153444\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">track record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of environmental compliance \u2014 more sustainable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No doubt it\u2019s investment into startups focusing on cleaner, more efficient mining techniques is part of this green push.
