Photo by Michal Murawski.<br \/>\n    <\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"credit\"><br \/>\n      \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264771\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Before Krakow\u2019s annual <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unsound.pl\/en\/noise\">UNSOUND<\/a> festival kicked off on September 29, I sent its featured artists a deceptively simple question: \u201cWhat the fuck is noise?\u201d The query comes from an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mattin.org\/essays\/THESES_ON_NOISE.html\">essay<\/a> by Spanish sound artist and theorist Mattin, who ran one of the festival\u2019s Noise Research Union workshops. UNSOUND organizer Mat Shulz used it to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unsound.pl\/en\/noise\/news\/the-theme-for-unsound-2024-is-noise\">announce the festival\u2019s 2024 theme<\/a>, NOISE, and I, in turn, commandeered it for our survey.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264830\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264772\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            I was thrilled with the responses we received from some of the most vital and venerated artists on UNSOUND\u2019s roster. Chuquimamani-Condori, who released <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chuquimamani-condori.bandcamp.com\/album\/dj-e\">2023\u2019s most original album<\/a>, called it \u201cthe cacophony of our first mother, the water called nowhere or mama cocha, the scream of our queer guardian, chuqi chinchay, emerging from the spring as wound or dehiscence, the first teaching.\u201d Left-field folk legend Bill Callahan noted, more pragmatically, that \u201c[n]oise is just two or more songs playing at the same time. It is efficient this way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            Meanwhile, enigmatic noise god Keiji Haino shared the following: \u201cI have become what is known as Noise. Other people want to be Noise. I would at least like Noise to be something that is overflowing from something. Just like [an] overflowing glass of water. It lurks in unfamiliar corners, packed with the potential to revolutionize your mind. Whether it comes quietly, oozing softly into your unsuspecting brain, or jumps out and spits in your face, setting your cochlea ablaze, is of no real significance, as long as it alters even the smallest of your preconceived notions. From their scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y post-post-punk inventions with Good Bad Happy Sad (fka Micachu &amp; The Shapes) to their wild catalog of collaborations \u2014 most recently a noisy guitar record with Alpha Maid \u2014 to her film scores, her portfolio is as varied as it gets. Following Tarta Relena, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sinfonietta.pl\/en\">Sinfonietta Cracovia<\/a> took the stage to perform a suite of Levi\u2019s compositions \u2014 short and jagged, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly minimalist but often jarring, too. Read our full review of that set here. <\/p>\n<p>On October 3, the festival\u2019s first official \u201cclub\u201d night, they played live for a huge crowd at Kamienna 12, a cavernous warehouse at the edge of Krakow\u2019s Warszawskie district, confabulated by the festival into two giant performance spaces and several other <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> areas. This set was much shorter but no less fruitful. During their 25 minutes on stage, they wielded a keytar and a keyboard synth, combining them to recreate songs from and adjacent to their transcendent 2023 album <i>DJ E<\/i>. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264781\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Antonina_Nowacka_with_Anna_Pasic_and_Magdalena_Gajdzica\"><\/span>\n        Antonina Nowacka (with Anna Pa\u0161i\u0107 and Magdalena Gajdzica)<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            On October 3 at Kino Kij\u00f3w, a massive movie theater just west of Krakow\u2019s famed old town, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/antoninawidt\/?hl=en\">Antonina Nowacka<\/a> sang siren songs from her recent album, <i>Sylphine Soporifera<\/i>, accompanying herself on zither alongside <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/annapasic\/?hl=en\">Anna Pa\u0161i\u0107<\/a> (harp) and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/magdalenagajdzica\/?hl=en\">Magdalena Gajdzica<\/a> (flute). The last few times I\u2019ve seen him live, he\u2019s played acoustic guitar, either unaccompanied or with very minimal accomp<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a>nt. Performing after Nowacka and Co. at Kino, though, he took the stage with an electric guitar and, later, an electrified harmonica, and proceeded to break the seated crowd\u2019s collective brain with ear-splitting renditions of some of his most quiet, comforting folk songs: \u201cIn the Pines,\u201d \u201cRock Bottom Riser,\u201d \u201cPigeons,\u201d \u201cCoyotes,\u201d \u201cBowevil,\u201d et al. For a longtime fan, it was revitalizing to see a mythical figure revert to his roots and get silly with it.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264783\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Petronn_Sphene\"><\/span>\n        Petronn Sphene<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Leeds-based \u201cno-wave rave\u201d artist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arcanepariahrecords.bandcamp.com\/\">Petronn Sphene<\/a> put on one of the wildest, most visceral performances I\u2019ve seen in some time at Kamienna 12 near midnight on October 4. The crowd went particularly crazy (or I did, at least) when he dropped \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lqEKig2l2As&amp;ab_channel=DJRashad\">Only One<\/a>,\u201d a profession of love from late footwork godfather DJ Rashad\u2019s all-time album <i>Double Cup<\/i>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264785\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Still_House_Plants\"><\/span>\n        Still House Plants<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            I\u2019ve never understood the hype around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stillhouseplants\/?hl=en\">Still House Plants<\/a>. I\u2019m still not sure I do, but watching them open a stacked three-part bill at \u0141a\u017ania Nowa on the afternoon of October 4 was an interesting experience. The way each performer is siloed off in their own world until they lock in for key, cathartic moments is clearer as it plays out on stage than it is on wax. Being there live to witness the fine line they toe between being a very good band and a very bad band helped me get a better understanding of what they\u2019re all about, although I\u2019m still a bit confused. It\u2019s somehow even more aggressive than the vantablack project his former duo, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com\/album\/duma\">Duma<\/a>, released in 2020. At Kamienna 12\u2019s second club night, he stirred the crowd into a frenzy, coaxing us into the only real mosh pit I saw all festival. Hailing from Belo Horizonte, he\u2019s an eight-hour drive from S\u00e3o Paulo \u2014 funk\u2019s experimental epicenter \u2014 and he\u2019s got his own thing going on; his work overlaps with, but is still separate from, that city\u2019s mandel\u00e3o scene. On his breakout album <i>Querid\u00e3o<\/i>, he creates some of the hardest rhythms you\u2019ll ever hear with very little traditional percussion, using negative space in its stead. At Kamienna 12, he catered to the dancing crowd, giving us more (recorded) boom-chot-chot beatboxing than I\u2019d bargained for. Still, he managed to balance undeniable bangers with genuinely fascinating production, a feat that\u2019s never easy to pull off.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264788\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nidia_Valentina\"><\/span>\n        N\u00eddia &amp; Valentina<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Afro-Portuguese producer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nidiasukulbembe\/?hl=en\">N\u00eddia<\/a> is one of the most exciting artists on the ever-interesting Pr\u00edncipe label, and her latest effort \u2014 a joint album with explosive Italian percussionist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/valentina_magaletti\/?hl=en\">Valentina Magaletti<\/a> \u2014 does not disappoint. At Kamienna 12, the duo elaborated on tracks from <i>Estradas<\/i> in what was perhaps the tightest, grooviest set of the week.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-264792\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<h5 class=\"headline\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lankum\"><\/span>\n        Lankum<br \/>\n      <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            There\u2019s no band mixing traditional Irish music with big-room drone like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lankumdublin\/?hl=en\">Lankum<\/a>. I\u2019ve never fully connected with their albums, but on October 5, watching each band member perform on separate risers on the stage of the gorgeous theater at ICE Krakow, their drummer draped in the flag of Palestine, was nothing short of inspiring. Her organ duet with her husband, Sunn O)))\u2019s Stephen O\u2019Malley, was preceded by vocal and brass quartets performing songs from her most recent record, <i>All Life Long<\/i>. Each of these were strange and lovely, and Malone would have done well to incorporate them more into her own segment of the set (the brass section pitched in to her and O\u2019Malley\u2019s organ work, but only minimally). He looks roughly the same as he did when he started, save for the few wrinkles and the silver hair he\u2019s earned from releasing hundreds of albums and collaborating with all the best experimentalists of his heyday. He began his UNSOUND intervention on guitar, shredding merciless sheets of shrill static as I fumbled to pull my earplugs out of their keychain case. He then slid left to a table that held three domed, motion-sensor synths, hovering over them like a wizard casting a wicked spell. Finally, he moved to the microphone, howling so hard it strained the prodigious PA system.
