\n If there were an AI prompt behind Indonesian action maestro Timo Tjahjanto\u2019s latest Netflix movie The Shadow Strays<\/em>, it would probably go something like this: \u201cGive me John Wick<\/em> but make it Indonesian women with uzis and samurai swords \u2014 and more brutal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Not that anything feels remotely artificial about the viscerally kinetic setpieces that explode off the screen throughout the cult filmmaker\u2019s latest action melodrama.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Tjahjanto has won a worldwide following with his relentlessly creative fight choreographies, punctuated with liberal doses of squirm-inducing ultra-violence. The Shadow Strays<\/em> is his second film for Netflix, following the more comedic The Big 4<\/em>, under an ongoing multi-picture deal. He also recently wrapp<\/a>ed production on his Hollywood debut, the action sequel Nobody 2<\/em>, starring Bob Odenkirk, Sharon Stone and the RZA, which is due out in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n The Shadow Strays<\/em>, which dropped on Netflix Thursday, is unlikely to disappoint the director\u2019s legions of international fans. The film tells the story of a teenage female assassin code-named 13, who belongs to an underground network of killers known as \u201cthe Shadows.\u201d When a young boy from the protagonist\u2019s neighborhood falls prey to a ruthless crime syndicate, 13 defies her mentor to save him \u2014 unleashing hell fury from all directions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018The Shadow Strays\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

\n Despite its brutality, Tjahjanto describes the film as a covert coming-of-age movie \u2014 to an extent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn the end, it\u2019s about this character learning the hardest lesson in life \u2014 that things are not always in your control,\u201d he explains. \u201cEven when you try to make things better, they might just get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The director said he cast his star, 20-year-old Aurora Ribero, after seeing her breakout performance in the youth drama Like & Share.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhen it comes to action, anybody who has the will and spirit to train can eventually execute it \u2014 but you don\u2019t see this humanity in every performer,\u201d Tjahjanto says. \u201cAurora has a certain innocence in her eyes that\u2019s one in a million.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Indeed, throughout Shadow Strays<\/em>, Ribero oscillates between moments of poignant fragility and unbridled rage. Hitting both these notes convincingly is what makes the actress\u2019 work particularly impressive, according to her director.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \u201cOne of the aspects that people tend to underestimate in making an action film is just how physically demanding it is \u2014 and even more so for Aurora on this project, because she had to keep walking a fine line between being a vulnerable person and a convincing killing machine,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe journey that she went on behind the scene was just as hard as what she went through on the screen. It\u2019s easy for people to take this genre for granted \u2014 to say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s just another Pow! Pow! action film\u2019 \u2014 but the commitment it requires is mind-boggling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Ribero, who had zero action cinema experience going into the project, spent four months training intensively with Tjahjanto\u2019s veteran stunt choreography crew. There were moments early in the preparation when she broke down and doubted whether she\u2019d be able to continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think it is one of the bravest things I have done in my life,\u201d she says. \u201cI felt so lost in the beginning. I do yoga, so I thought I was pretty flexible, but it turns out I needed to have strength too. But once you get into the flow of the training, you build muscle memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Tjahajanto concedes that he hardly conforms to the stereotypes of stunt cinema himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \u201cOn the film I just shot, Nobody 2<\/em>, I think a lot of the Hollywood stunt guys and the choreography team were expecting some muscle-bound dude with a stunt background to arrive on set,\u201d he says. \u201cInstead, they got this scrawny Asian guy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n He adds: \u201cI am known as an action director, but it\u2019s funny because the kinds of films I really prefer are human dramas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n The filmmaker says he strove to imbue the Shadow Strays<\/em>\u2018 characters with the kind of human complexity that wouldn\u2019t be out of place in an Akira Kurosawa classic. But he also wanted to create a pitiless world for his story \u2014 \u201cdarker and moodier, with a neonoir aesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think there is room for violent action cinema,\u201d he explains. \u201cNot every action movie has to be a superhero movie. I don\u2019t have any problem with superhero movies<\/a>. But action films, in the end, are made for grown-up people. And I want grown-ups to watch this and be able to say, \u2018Yeah, that\u2019s what happens if you put a sword into a person\u2019s neck.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Asked what he hopes to transport from Indonesia\u2019s action cinema to Hollywood with his forthcoming work with Odenkirk on Nobody 2<\/em>, Tjahajanto is blunt: \u201cI hope it\u2019s the brutality.\u201d <\/p>\n
