Then it will embark on an 8-year mission, visiting several other satellites and giving them a new lease on life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RISE, which is about the size of a minivan, will be like a car mechanic, but for aging spacecraft. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The space mechanic\u2019s first client is likely to be a telecommunications satellite that\u2019s running low on fuel but still has the capacity to keep connecting people worldwide, said ESA. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If successful, D-Orbit will be the first European company to demonstrate in-orbit servicing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_circular_economy_in_space\"><\/span><b>A circular economy in space\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filling up our car with petrol, driving it until it runs empty, and then abandoning it on the side of the road isn\u2019t something we\u2019d do on Earth. But that\u2019s how things have worked in space for a long time. This is not only expensive, but one of the root causes of space debris.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of RISE is to extend the operational life of satellites and dispose of them safely, so that they don\u2019t contribute to the growing cosmic traffic jam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At present, there are over 34,000 pieces of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">space<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">junk larger than 10 centimetres circling around our world. What\u2019s more, there are about 6,500 operational satellites in orbit, a number expected to exceed 27,000 by the decade\u2019s end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these objects are increasing the risk of collisions with other satellites, space stations, or even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people down on Earth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the build-up of trash continues at this rate, some regions of space <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/11\/space-debris-satellite-international-space-station\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could become unusable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And for those of us on Earth, the litter\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/elon-musk-starlink-satellites-astronomy-b2615717.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruining our views<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the cosmos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel with RISE, ESA is collaborating with Swiss startup ClearSpace on a mission focused on debris removal. ClearSpace-1, scheduled for launch by 2026, aims to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively remove a piece of space debris<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from orbit.
