His sister, Donna Rhorer, told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2024\/10\/16\/nx-s1-5113976\/organ-transplantion-mistake-brain-dead-surgery-still-alive\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">NPR<\/a> that she notified medical staff that the 36-year-old was a registered organ donor.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, during his \u201chonor walk\u201d \u2014 being wheeled to the operating room for organ donation while surrounded by loved ones and hospital staff \u2014 Rhorer and other family members expressed concern when Hoover <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to open his eyes.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt was like it was his way of letting us know, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m still here,\u2019 \u201d she told the outlet, noting that staff told the family it was just a common reflex. Her job involves preserving donated organs for transplantation. She told the outlet that after seeing the patient, she im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely knew something was wrong and he didn\u2019t appear dead.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cHe was moving around \u2014 kind of thrashing. Like, moving, thrashing around on the bed,\u201d she claimed. \u201cAnd then when we went over there, you could see he had tears coming down. He was crying visibly.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Miller explained that Hoover\u2019s condition alarmed everyone in the room, including two doctors who allegedly said they no longer felt comfortable participating in the organ retrieval and refused to continue.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThe procuring surgeon, he was like, \u2018I\u2019m out of it. I don\u2019t want to have anything to do with it,\u2019 \u201d she recalled. \u201cIt was very chaotic. Everyone was just very upset.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Miller alleges that her supervisor was instructed by the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) to \u201cfind another doctor\u201d to perform the surgery and proceed with the organ retrieval. Play now!<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The procedure was ultimately canceled. \u201cThey finally stopped the procedure because he was showing too many signs of life,\u201d Rhorer said, adding that she took her brother back home and was told to make him comfortable because he wouldn\u2019t live long.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Three years later, Hoover is still alive and being cared for by his sister as he has difficulty with walking, talking and memory.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A number of KODA workers say they quit over the October 2021 incident, including another organ preservationist, Nyckoletta Martin.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cI\u2019ve dedicated my entire life to organ donation and transplant. It\u2019s very scary to me now that these things are allowed to happen and there\u2019s not more in place to protect donors,\u201d she told NPR.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Martin, alongside other witnesses, has now come forward to testify about what happened during the organ retrieval process. In September, she shared details about the alleged incident in a letter to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/energycommerce.house.gov\/events\/oversight-and-investigations-subcommittee-hearing-a-year-removed-oversight-of-securing-the-u-s-organ-procurement-and-transplantation-network-act-implementation\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">House Energy and Commerce Committee<\/a>, which held a hearing investigating organ procurement organizations.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cSeveral of us that were employees needed to go to therapy. It took its toll on a lot of people, especially me,\u201d Martin said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThat\u2019s everybody\u2019s worst nightmare, right? Being alive during surgery and knowing that someone is going to cut you open and take your body parts out?\u201d she added. \u201cThat\u2019s horrifying.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-universal-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme mntl-sc-block-image figure-landscape figure-high-res\"><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-figure-caption type--mouse figure-article-caption\"> <span class=\"figure-article-caption-owner\">Getty<\/p>\n<p><\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> KODA has since denied the allegations, claiming in a statement that \u201cthis case has not been accurately represented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cNo one at KODA has ever been pressured to collect organs from any living patient,\u201d Julie Bergin \u2014 president and chief operating officer for Network for Hope, which was formed when KODA merged with the LifeCenter Organ Donor Network \u2014 said in a statement, NPR reports. \u201cKODA does not recover organs from living patients. KODA has never pressured its team members to do so.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The organization did not respond to PEOPLE\u2019s request for comment.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which helps oversee organ procurement, and the Kentucky state attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>\u2019s office said that they are investigating the allegations.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_49-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> An <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aopo.org\/transplant-advocates-campaign-of-misinformation-causing-drop-in-registered-organ-donors-and-threatening-lives-of-patients\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">open letter<\/a> from the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations addressed the incident.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_51-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cOur organ donation and transplant system is powered entirely by trust, and the American public should feel confident when they register as donors that their gifts will be respected and honored,\u201d said Dorrie Dils, President of AOPO.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_53-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She later told NPR that incidents like this are \u201calarming\u201d and should be properly reported and evaluated.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_55-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cObviously we want to ensure that individuals are, in fact, dead when organ donation is proceeding,\u201d Dils said. \u201cAnd we want the public to trust that that is indeed happening. The process is sacred.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_57-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Rhorer admitted that she often feels angry about how the incident played out.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_59-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cI feel betrayed by the fact that the people that were telling us he was brain dead and then he wakes up,\u201d Rhorer told the outlet. \u201cThey are trying to play God. They\u2019re almost, you know, picking and choosing \u2014 they\u2019re going to take this person to save these people.
