A woman he was seeing was playing his music in the car. \u201cI&#8217;m like, \u2018Damn, who is this dude?\u2019\u201d the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/helluva313\/?hl=en\">Detroit producer<\/a> says. She told him it was 03 Greedo, \u201cthe underground king.\u201d \u201cSo I\u2019m like, \u2018Where he at?\u2019 She like, \u2018He locked up \u2014 and I don&#8217;t think he ever getting out.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265160\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265140\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            It was entirely possible 03 Greedo, real name Jason Jamal Jackson, would remain behind bars until 2038. On June 27, 2018, Greedo was incarcerated in Texas to begin serving a 20-year sentence on nonviolent drug charges. The prison term fractured the Californian artist\u2019s ascendant career trajectory even as it crystallized narratives around his hyper-vivid crime raps; legal troubles had hung over Greedo even before his December 2017 deal with Alamo Records \u2014 around the same time as his signing, he spent a few weeks in jail for missed court dates, bonding out on Christmas Day \u2014 but his April 2018 sentencing seemed akin to state-imposed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/03Greedo\/status\/1010284286493143040\">career death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            From Paris to New York, Houston to Detroit, but especially in his native Los Angeles, Greedo was already a cult hero prior to his imprisonment, a myth made flesh. So his early release on January 12, 2023, felt a bit like Easter: that he served \u201cjust\u201d four and a half years seemed like divine providence. The Californian r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er was still in a halfway house for up to 6 months, but at least he was out of prison.<\/p>\n<p>            But being out of prison isn\u2019t quite the same as being free. \u201cAmerica\u2019s fucked up,\u201d Greedo says over a phone call in October while driving around Los Angeles. \u201cYou got a criminal record that\u2019s expansive like I do, and you&#8217;re trying to bubble in this world, it\u2019s like you got one foot in, one foot out. He\u2019s the sort of lyricist who can turn a wordless melody into a titanic earworm or reel off a vicious <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of syncopated bars on a whim. In conversation, Greedo is as likely to cite the influence of Phil Collins and Sting as Boosie Badazz and Lil Durk.<\/p>\n<p>            &#8220;Out of everybody, he don&#8217;t have no ceiling,&#8221; Helluva says of working with Greedo. &#8220;He can get on some melody shit, but he also got the vocal range to do anything anybody else could do, from Future to Uzi. And if you want to go with straight bars, he got clever punches, rhymes, syllables. Bar for bar, he would beat up on anybody.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            His technical capability as a lyricist is mirrored by his tender attention to detail and atmosphere, stitching together romance and robberies, shootouts and celebrations. To call him versatile is an understatement; at his best, Greedo dissolves outdated notions of \u201cgenre\u201d or \u201cregionalism,\u201d cutting straight past conscious thought to primal feeling the same way a hook written by Ariana Grande or Paramore might.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265142\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cI\u2019ve always said that I\u2019m really a pop star that just happened to be from the projects,\u201d Greedo says. \u201cIf I didn&#8217;t have to be in an environment I was in, I would never have had a gun case or been shot or anything like that. I would just strictly be talking about regular heartache.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Zooming in on California, Greedo\u2019s \u201ccreep music\u201d sits adjacent to the \u201cnervous music\u201d of the late Drakeo the Ruler and the \u201ctraffic music\u201d of Shoreline Mafia. Depending on who you ask, these subgenres might be arranged like siblings or Russian nesting dolls, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> textures and tones are the same, warping the club-ready forms of ratchet and hyphy into something more imposing.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThe reason my shit is called creep music is because I know it&#8217;s all flawless,\u201d Greedo says. \u201cEvery single piece of it is flawless, and it&#8217;s on purpose, and it&#8217;s gonna grow on you later.\u201d He knows this is true because it\u2019s already happened: 2018\u2019s \u201cSubstance,\u201d his biggest hit to date, was certified platinum in 2022 after Greedo paid for the music video out of pocket from jail.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265150\" class=\"content_block This may confuse just about anyone familiar with the Watts, CA, rapper\u2019s lengthy discography: Even setting aside his various 30-song-plus mixtapes (I&#8217;m partial to 2017\u2019s <i>Purple Summer<\/i> and 2018\u2019s <i>God Level<\/i>), he doesn\u2019t count the more polished projects with Mustard and Kenny Beats, or last spring\u2019s <i>Halfway There<\/i>, as official albums. \u201cI wasn\u2019t out to tour and do any promo for releases before,\u201d Greedo told me back in February. <\/p>\n<p>            Much of Greedo\u2019s discography was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/03Greedo\/status\/993616351649398784\">recorded under immense pressure<\/a>, and so his new album, produced almost entirely by Helluva, is a product of luxury. Before, Greedo had to \u201cput everything out, even the bloopers\u201d in an attempt to compress years of recording into weeks and sustain his career while incarcerated. Nowadays, he can \u201cget like 25 songs and chop them down to 16, really putting what [I] believe in the product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <i>Hella Greedy<\/i> is accordingly focused and fine tuned, a triumphant culmination for longtime fans that can still serve as a digestible entry point for listeners just tuning in. Recorded in Houston and Detroit, the album slaloms from shootouts to missed funerals, strip clubs to heartache. This thematic breadth is mirrored by the wide range of Greedo\u2019s stylistic approaches: nasally falsetto\u2019d run-on flows, diaphragm-belted vocal runs, contemplative murmurs, baritone chants, and more. Not to be outdone, Helluva\u2019s production here is similarly wide-ranging, from the acoustic guitars driving \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hMD7zxg4oho\">Militant Pt. 2<\/a>\u201d and \u201cDevil Offa Me\u201d to the squelching ratchet synths on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xXDr_ZRrKAY\">Sumn Pretty<\/a>\u201d and \u201cMove.\u201d The net result is a record that recalls the big-budget major label albums of yesteryear: there\u2019s a little something for everyone and it sounds like a bajillion dollars.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265152\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"03 Greedo - Still In Shocc\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2FDQA1apsWY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265144\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Greedo\u2019s pop instincts shine brightest on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8LIHnOhdQCw\">Move<\/a>\u201d and \u201cMove Pt. 2.\u201d The former is a breakup anthem, 03 crooning about getting over a lover by \u201cmoving on to someone else.\u201d By contrast, \u201cMove Pt. 2\u201d firmly faces forward, his delivery growing more plaintive to match the operatic intensity of Helluva\u2019s instrumental. <i>I walked up out that penitentiary and I had my \/ head to the sky, feet to the ground, pistol on my lap riding with a hunnid thou \/ head to skyyyyy \/ and I won\u2019t budge, won\u2019t budge, won\u2019t budge\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI&#8217;m just trying to move differently now,\u201d Greedo says of \u201cMove Pt. 2.\u201d \u201cSo that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s at the end, it&#8217;s like a victory lap. Basically this whole album is me washing my hands of the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Still, <i>Hella Greedy<\/i> features some of Greedo\u2019s most electric gangster raps to date, in particular Maxo Kream collab \u201cR.I.C.O.,\u201d a genuine contender for the best song of the year. The song\u2019s first half is great (\u201cHow you bragging \u2018bout a self-defense? You caught a free case,\u201d Maxo tisks on the hook), and Greedo stalks through Helluva\u2019s seething minor keys with measured menace. Then, Maxo intones as the beat twists: \u201cWe do walk ups and run downs, we on your ass can\u2019t run now.\u201d The instrumental\u2019s second half, produced by Mia Jayc, sends both rappers into overdrive; attempting to dissect Greedo\u2019s verse for standout moments would probably end with you highlighting the whole thing.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265153\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI\u2019ve always said that I\u2019m really a pop star that just happened to be from the projects.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265145\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            If you had to distill <i>Hella Greedy<\/i> down to just one track, it would be \u201cStill Feel Loaded.\u201d Where he previously recorded with access to a cornucopia of psychoactive supplements, Greedo is now subject to regular piss tests per the terms of his parole. Sobriety and legal scrutiny, however, haven\u2019t dampened his creative output in the slightest: <i>I can\u2019t do no drugs, still smoke shit \/ I can\u2019t even have the pole still blow shit<\/i>, goes the hook. Later, he\u2019ll add, \u201cFelons can\u2019t vote so it\u2019s fuck Joe Biden \/ Fuck the gun laws, all my n***as so violent.\u201d \u201cMe and Drakeo, we were super into the villain thing, so when that come on it just feel like a movie,\u201d Greedo says of the song.<\/p>\n<p>            The album\u2019s many beat switches are all Greedo, cutting files together in Pro Tools until concepts gelled together just so. Greedo and Helluva recorded most of the album in person, working on beats and verses concurrently in adjacent rooms; Greedo\u2019s verses are freestyled and unedited, though he would go back in to tweak aspects of the production. He characterizes the longer development process as both rewarding and \u201ca bit nerve wracking.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI feel like I gotta put them extra bells and whistles because I don&#8217;t like when people be saying, \u2018Oh, no one&#8217;s going to hear Cali music past California.\u2019\u201d Greedo says. \u201cSo that&#8217;s why I came home really trying to go extra hard.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265157\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"03 Greedo, Maxo Kream - R.I.C.O.\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Y4i7jizlL4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265146\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            If <i>Hella Greedy<\/i> is truly his \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/03Greedo\/status\/1840930980317835569\">last street album<\/a>,\u201d it\u2019s hard to imagine a better way to close out this chapter of his career. When I ask about balancing tougher songs with the album\u2019s more romantic middle suite, Greedo shrugs off the notion that the two would be separate at all.<\/p>\n<p>            &#8220;The streets are very romantic. There&#8217;s a lot of love and heartbreak in the streets. You lose a lot more people that are close to you in the streets than in the regular world,&#8221; Greedo says. &#8220;My whole image has been trying to show people that the people from the projects or from the streets are not monsters, but we go through human situations, just as much if not more than people in the square areas. You feel me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            &#8220;Sometimes you might have a thug killing his n***a, and [he] might be a hopeless romantic,&#8221; Helluva chimes in. &#8220;A hopeless romantic, tenderdick motherfucker.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            &#8220;Exactly,&#8221; Greedo says. &#8220;Future has the most love songs and more platinum hits than Beyonc\u00e9, and he&#8217;s the street-est artist ever. I had to master saying some of the foulest shit and making it sound beautiful. Because in my project, that\u2019s what they do with conversation, so I try to translate that with my music.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265147\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cThe streets are very romantic. There\u2019s a lot of love and heartbreak in the streets. You lose a lot more people that are close to you in the streets than in the regular world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265148\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Don\u2019t get it twisted: 03 Greedo is still 03 Greedo. But he wouldn\u2019t mind if haters doubting his credentials wrote him out of gangster rap entirely. \u201cPeople don&#8217;t understand that after doing five years in prison for kilos, you want to show people that you could be on Tostitos commercials like Snoop [Dogg] and \u2018em,\u201d Greedo laughs. \u201cYou definitely want to clean your whole story up. Go ahead! Delete me out of the street world so they just accept me as the squarest trademarking ass artist they can find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            He\u2019d like to get off parole, fly out of the country and see the world; hide away somewhere to work on art and fashion. He wants to \u201cstart painting with my brother <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nyreearts\/?hl=en\">Nyree<\/a>,\u201d a visual artist working on Playboi Carti\u2019s <i>I Am Music<\/i> rollout. He says his next album, <i>The Life I Deserve<\/i>, will show more of his pop influences, closer to his feature on Mach-Hommy\u2019s Kaytranada-produced \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nfZhtaL-pwU\">RICHAXXHAITIAN<\/a>.\u201d Maybe after he\u2019s fulfilled the terms of his deal with Alamo, he\u2019ll return to self-producing his music, though he\u2019s in no rush.<\/p>\n<p>            Going forward, 03 Greedo doesn\u2019t \u201cwant to make music that makes people want to do anything but happy shit,\u201d he says. \u201cBeing from such a demonic environment in the past, I don&#8217;t want to be on that. Nobody gets all their friends killed to want to get their new friends killed. No one gets shot at and make it home to try to get shot at again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            &#8220;At the end of the day, I&#8217;m on the phone with The FADER magazine in an Aston Martin,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou can&#8217;t trick me into thinking this isn&#8217;t a miracle and I just had a life sentence last year. I&#8217;m exactly what I wanted to be when I was 12.
