A federal jury ruled Friday that Masimo smartwatches infringed App<\/a>le patents, but Apple isn\u2019t getting a big payday.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg Law reports<\/a> that the company was only seeking the statutory minimum of $250, and that\u2019s all it was awarded. Apple\u2019s attorney John Desmarais reportedly told jurors, \u201cWe\u2019re not here for the money.\u201d Instead, he said the company hoped to force Masimo to \u201cstop copying our design.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company may have been disappointed on that front. The jury did find<\/a> that the original design for Masimo\u2019s W1 Freedom and health module, as well as its original charger, infringed on Apple design patents, and that the infringement was willful.<\/p>\n

However, in a statement, Masimo noted that the findings only applied to \u201ca discontinued module and charger,\u201d not its current products.<\/p>\n

\u201cApple primarily sought an injunction against Masimo\u2019s current products, and the jury\u2019s verdict is a victory for Masimo on that issue,\u201d the medical device company said.<\/p>\n

The trial resulted from Apple\u2019s countersuit in its ongoing legal battle with Masimo, which started with the Masimo\u2019s claim that its patents had been infringed by the Apple Watch\u2019s pulse-oximetry feature, which allows Watch owners to measure their blood oxygen levels. Apple disabled the feature in the Apple Watch Series<\/a> 9 and Ultra 2, and it\u2019s also missing from the new Series 10. These limitations only apply in the United States, with Apple is appealing an import ban on models with the contested feature.<\/p>\n

Desmerais reportedly told the jury that the pulse-oximetry feature \u201chas nothing to do with this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
