iPod creator, Nest Labs founder, and investor Tony Fadell took a shot at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday during a spirited interview at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 in San Francisco. Speaking about his understanding of the longer history of AI development before the LLM craze and the serious issues with LLM hallucinations, he said, \u201cI\u2019ve been doing AI for 15 years, people, I\u2019m not just spouting sh** \u2014 I\u2019m not Sam Altman, okay?\u201d <\/p>\n

The comment drew a surprised murmur of \u201coohs\u201d from the shocked crowd amid just a small handful of app<\/a>lause. <\/p>\n

Fadell had been on a roll during his interview, touching on a number of topics ranging from what kind of \u201ca**holes\u201d can produce great products to what\u2019s wrong with today\u2019s LLMs. <\/p>\n

While admitting that LLMs are \u201cgreat for certain things,\u201d he explained that there were still serious concerns to be addressed. <\/p>\n

\u201cLLMs are trying to be this \u2018general<\/a>\u2019 thing because we\u2019re trying to make science<\/a> fiction happen,\u201d he said. \u201c[LLMs are] a know-it-all\u2026I hate know-it-alls.\u201d <\/p>\n

Instead, Fadell suggested that he would prefer to use AI agents that are trained on specific things and are more transparent about their errors and hallucinations. That way, people would be able to know everything about the AI before \u201chiring\u201d them for the specific job at hand. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hiring them to\u2026educate me, I\u2019m hiring them to be a co-pilot with me, or I\u2019m hiring them to replace me,\u201d he explained. \u201cI want to know what this thing is,\u201d adding that governments should get involved to force such transparency.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, he noted, companies using AI would be putting their reputations on the line for \u201csome bullshit technology<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we\u2019re all adopting this thing and we don\u2019t know what problems it causes,\u201d Fadell pointed out. He noted also that a recent report said that doctors using ChatGPT to create patient reports had hallucinations in 90% of them. \u201cThose could kill people,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe are using this stuff and we don\u2019t even know how it works.\u201d <\/p>\n

(Fadell seemed to be referring to the recent report where researchers had found that University of Michigan researchers studying AI transcriptions found an excessive number of hallucinations, which could be dangerous in medical contexts.) <\/p>\n

The comment about Altman followed as he shared with the crowd that he has been working with AI technologies for years. Nest, for instance, used AI in its thermostat back in 2011. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe couldn\u2019t talk about AI, we couldn\u2019t talk about machine learning,\u201d Fadell noted, \u201cbecause people would get scared as sh** \u2014 \u2018I don\u2019t want AI in my house\u2019 \u2014 now everybody wants AI everywhere.\u201d <\/p>\n
