Zoox co-founder and CTO Jesse Levinson doesn\u2019t believe Tesla will launch a robotaxi ride-hailing service in California (or anywhere else) next year despite what Elon Musk recently claimed.<\/p>\n

The \u201cfundamental issue is they don\u2019t have technology<\/a> that works,\u201d Levinson said Wednesday at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024. \u201cAnd by works, I want to differentiate between a driver assistance system that drives most of the time \u2014 except when it doesn\u2019t, and then you have to take over \u2014 versus a system that\u2019s so reliable and robust that you don\u2019t need a person in it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Levinson went further and specifically pointed to Tesla\u2019s decision to rely solely on cameras to support its driver assistance system. \u201cOur perspective is you really do need significantly more hardware than Tesla is putting in their vehicles to build a robotaxi that is not just as safe, but as especially safer than a human,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Levinson\u2019s comments come just a few weeks after Musk revealed the prototype of Tesla\u2019s so-called \u201cCybercab\u201d robotaxi. Musk also announced at the Cybercab event that Tesla wants to start allowing Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs to operate as robotaxis in California and Texas by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n

Levinson said he uses Tesla\u2019s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software \u201cevery couple of weeks.\u201d And while he called it \u201cimpressive,\u201d he also said he finds it \u201ca bit stressful.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cUsually it does the right thing, and then it sort of lulls you into this false sense of complacency, and then it does the wrong thing,\u201d he said. \u2018You\u2019re like, Oh, my God!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Levinson went on to say he believes FSD is \u201cabout 100 times less safe than a human if you look at all the metrics that are publicly available.\u201d (Tesla releases quarterly safety reports<\/a> that claim its driver-assistance gets into fewer crashes than cars without it \u2014 though these self-reported statistics have been criticized<\/a> as being selective.)<\/p>\n

The comments about Tesla came as Levinson announced Zoox is launching its custom-built robotaxi in San Francisco and Las Vegas markets in the coming weeks. The company plans to make them available to an early-rider program in 2025. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
