Japanese horror manga<\/a> artist <\/span>Kazuo Umezu<\/b> passed away last week on October 28, 2024 at the age of 88. His close family and friends held a private funeral.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The artist was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer after collapsing at his home in July 2024. He had been living in hospice care since this past September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Umezu was born in Koya in Wakayama prefecture on September 3, 1936, but was primarily raised in the city of Gojo in Nara. He made his debut as a professional manga artist at the age of 18 in 1955, working on the <\/span>Hansel and Gretel<\/span><\/i>-inspired manga <\/span>Mori no Kyodai<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Bessekai<\/span><\/i> that were published under Tomo Books.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Heavily influenced by Japanese folktales, his manga often focused on horror elements, but he had also worked in genres such as science<\/a> fiction (<\/span>My Name is Shingo<\/span><\/i>) and gag comedy (<\/span>Makoto-chan<\/span><\/i>), as well as contributing works in the shojo demographic such as <\/span>Reptilia<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His most notable work, <\/span>The Drifting Classroom<\/span><\/i>, was published between 1972 and 1974, which won the 20th Shogakukan Manga Award. It inspired three live-action film adaptations.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

VIZ Media<\/a> recently made Umezu\u2019s work available in English, crediting him with the name \u201c<\/span>Kazuo Umezz<\/b>.\u201d The company has licensed and released <\/span>The Drifting Classroom<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Cat Eyed Boy, My Name is Shingo<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Orochi<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s Agency for Cultural Affairs awarded Umezu with its \u201cCommissioner for Cultural Affairs\u201d award in March 2019, which honors \u201cindividuals who have made distinguished accomplishment in artistic and cultural activities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
