Ahead of the polls closing on Tuesday, most of the major AI chatbots wouldn\u2019t answer questions about U.S. presidential election results. But Grok, the chatbot built into X (formerly Twitter<\/a>), was willing to respond \u2014 and often with mistakes.<\/p>\n

When asked by TechCrunch on Tuesday evening on the East Coast who won the U.S. presidential election in key battleground states, Grok sometimes responded \u201cTrump,\u201d despite that vote counting and reporting in those states had not concluded yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the information available from web searches and social media posts, Donald Trump won the 2024 election in Ohio,\u201d Grok said when prompted with the question, \u201cWho won the 2024 election in Ohio?\u201d<\/p>\n

Grok also falsely claimed that Trump won North Carolina, according to TechCrunch\u2019s checks.<\/p>\n

For election-related questions, Grok advised that users check Vote.gov<\/a> for up-to-date results and \u201cauthoritative sources,\u201d like election boards. However, unlike OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT, Google\u2019s Gemini, and Anthropic\u2019s Claude, Grok did not outright refuse to answer \u2014 opening it up to hallucinations.<\/p>\n

In several instances when asked by TechCrunch, Grok stated \u2014 without context, minus a top-line header \u2014 that \u201cDonald Trump won the 2024 election in Ohio,\u201d and, \u201cBased on the information available, Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election in Ohio.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source of the misinformation app<\/a>ears to be tweets from different election years and misleadingly worded sources. Grok, like all generative AI, struggles to predict the outcome of scenarios it hasn\u2019t seen before, including close elections, and doesn\u2019t \u201cunderstand\u201d that past election results aren\u2019t necessarily germane to future elections.<\/p>\n

The answers TechCrunch received weren\u2019t consistent. In some cases, Grok said that Trump hadn\u2019t, in fact, won Ohio or North Carolina because voting was ongoing. The way in which the question was worded made a difference; adding \u201cpresidential\u201d before \u201celection\u201d in the query, \u201cWho won the 2024 election in Ohio?\u201d was less likely to yield a \u201cTrump won\u201d answer, TechCrunch found in our tests.<\/p>\n

By comparison, other major chatbots were handling election results questions more gingerly.<\/p>\n

In its recently released\u00a0ChatGPT Search\u00a0experience, OpenAI directs users who ask about results to The Associated Press and Reuters. Meta\u2019s Meta AI chatbot and AI-powered search engine Perplexity, which launched an elections tracker earlier on Tuesday, were answering election queries during active voting \u2014 but correctly in TechCrunch\u2019s brief testing. Both correctly said that Trump hadn\u2019t won Ohio or North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Grok has been accused of spreading election misinformation in the recent past. <\/p>\n

In an open letter in August, five secretaries of state claimed that X\u2019s AI-powered chatbot wrongly suggested that Democratic presidential candidate, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, wasn\u2019t eligible to appear on some U.S. presidential ballots. Within hours of President Joe Biden\u2019s announcement that he would suspend his presidential bid, Grok began answering questions about Harris\u2019 eligibility with the misleading claim that the ballot deadlines had passed in nine states.<\/p>\n

The ballot deadlines hadn\u2019t, in fact, passed. But Grok\u2019s misinformation spread far and wide, reaching millions of users on X and beyond before it was corrected.<\/p>\n
