\n\tJohn Oliver took a close look at the results of the 2024 presidential election on Sunday\u2019s Last Week Tonight, <\/em>diving right in to examine how Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

\n\tObviously, that was not an outcome Oliver had hoped for, having spent the end of last week\u2019s show arguing for undecided viewers to vote for Vice President Harris, the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[O]n Tuesday, Trump won re-election,\u201d he said at the beginning of Sunday\u2019s show, to boos from the audience, \u201cwhich is, to put it mildly, not what I was personally hoping would happ<\/a>en. And honestly, in Trump\u2019s victory speech, he couldn\u2019t seem to believe it either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe HBO host then showed a clip of Trump\u2019s speech, in which the former president and current president-elect said: \u201cWe overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible, and it is now clear that we\u2019ve achieved the most incredible political thing,\u201d he said, adding incredulously: \u201cLook what happened. Is this crazy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSaid Oliver: \u201cYeah, it is crazy. It\u2019s really fucking crazy. He\u2019s basically one sentence away from saying, \u2018I mean, you guys saw what I did, right? And you still voted for this. That doesn\u2019t make any sense.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOliver continued: \u201cI know being a shambling verbal mess is part of Trump\u2019s brand, but it is still incredible to see an incoming president ad-lib a victory speech with the same energy as the best man who didn\u2019t realize he had to give a toast: \u2018What a beautiful day. What, what a beautiful beauty today. My brother and his girlfriend \u2014 wife, sorry \u2014 today they\u2026 they did the thing you all saw it. I thought my part was done with the bachelor party, but here we go. Marriage is crazy, right? It\u2019s crazy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOliver went on to note how it\u2019s been a \u201crough week\u201d in which \u201cthe tiniest moments this week, where the world was going on like nothing had happened could be suddenly enraging.\u201d He cited examples such as text from a relative extending an invitation to Thanksgiving, The New York Times <\/em>sending an alert about a recipe for roast chicken, and the Hello Kitty brand posting on X a word search puzzle with the caption, \u201cChecking in \u2026 What are you looking forward to this month?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHey, Hello Kitty \u2014\u00a0not fucking now,\u201d Oliver said. \u201cI would love to tell you what I\u2019m looking forward to, but I cannot seem to find \u2018drinking my lights out and [having] some grief mac and cheese\u2019 on your stupid puzzle. Get the fuck out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe noted that X users also got mad at a video teaser for Tyla\u2019s new song in which a derriere wearing jean shorts was being buffed. The teaser was posted the day after the election and elicited responses like \u201cnot now girl. not now\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cTyla reading the room\u201d with a gif of Lea Michelle. However, many others pointed out that the singer is South African, with one noting: \u201cShe is literally South African. \u2026 Nobody\u2019s happy that Trump won including me, but she\u2019s literally not an American. What do y\u2019all want from her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhich is fair,\u201d Oliver noted. \u201cPeople in other countries are allowed to buff their jean shorts. They didn\u2019t put us in this situation. We did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe went on: \u201cAnd, and honestly, if you are watching this right now and thinking, you know what, I\u2019m not actually ready for this either, I totally get it. It is understandable not to want yet another guy in a suit doom squawking at you. So if you are too angry, depressed or worried to watch the rest of this show, no problem. I have been in each of those places this week, and they are all a correct reaction because look, we did a show like this after the election in 2016 when no one expected Trump to win. This time, though, his winning felt like a real possibility all year long, lots of people mobilized to stop it, but it happened anyway, which feels somehow worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLater, Oliver gave some advice to his viewers who are struggling to come to terms with the results of the election.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[O]n Jan. 20, Trump is getting sworn back into office and that is very depressing. So what do the rest of us do next? Well, for the next few days, I\u2019d say whatever you want,\u201d he said. \u201cI am not gonna judge you for how you get through the next week for two reasons. One, I\u2019m not gonna see it. I am in the TV. This is far away from where you actually are.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd two, because there is no right reaction right now; lots of us are grieving and grief has stages. We take different amounts of time for different people. The stage I\u2019m currently locked in is anger. I am mad for trans people who\u2019ve been threatened. I\u2019m disgusted at the prospect of mass deportation. I\u2019m furious at Biden for not dropping out earlier, and that the egos and inaction of two men [Trump and Biden] older than credit cards themselves have led us to this point. I\u2019m mad that women have to hear \u2018your body, my choice\u2019 from right-wing dipshits. I\u2019m mad that Elon Musk is apparently sitting in on meetings with the president of Ukraine. I\u2019m mad about the myriad of damage Trump will do that cannot easily be undone like setting back efforts to fight climate change and appointing more Supreme Court justices. And I\u2019m mad at the prospect of four more years of people saying, \u2018So is your job like so much easier with Trump as president?\u2019 No, it is not! No, it fucking isn\u2019t! Fuck you so much!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
