\n\tPaul Engelen, the British makeup designer\u00a0who earned two Emmys and two Oscar nominations in a fabulous career that included work on Reds<\/em>, Batman<\/em>, The Phantom Menace<\/em>, Gladiator<\/em> and Game<\/a> of Thrones<\/em>, has died. He was 75.<\/p>\n

\n\tEngelen died Nov. 3 of cancer at his home in West Sussex, England, his son-in-law (and fellow makeup designer) Daniel Lawson Johnston told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tEngelen also did makeup for three James Bonds \u2014 Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig \u2014 on the 007 films The Man With the Golden Gun<\/em> (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me <\/em>(1977), Moonraker<\/em> (1979), Die Another Day<\/em> (2002), Casino Royale<\/em> (2006) and Quantum of Solace<\/em> (2008).<\/p>\n

\n\tHe teamed with Blake Edwards on Victor\/Victoria<\/em> (1982), Trail of the Pink Panther<\/em> (1982) and Curse of the Pink Panther<\/em> (1983), with Steven Spielberg on Empire of the Sun<\/em> (1987) and Munich<\/em> (2005) and with Ridley Scott on Gladiator<\/em> (2000), Kingdom of Heaven<\/em> (2005) and Robin Hood<\/em> (2010).<\/p>\n

\n\tEngelen shared his first Academy Award nom with Rick Baker for Hugh Hudson\u2019s Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes<\/em> (1984) and his second with Daniel Parker and Carol Hemming for Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein<\/em> (1994), directed by Kenneth Branagh. He lost out on Oscar night to Amadeus<\/em> and Ed Wood<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n

\n\tFrankenstein<\/em>, with Robert De Niro as the creature, \u201cwas hard work,\u201d he recalled<\/a> in 2006. \u201cAnd certainly one of the toughest films, from a makeup point of view, that I\u2019ve worked on. And it\u2019s impossible to have any other life when you are at work at 3 am every morning preparing the actors for hours in the makeup chair. It is very demanding, and you have people in the chair for hours at a time. And you have to get it on properly and \u2014 people forget \u2014 you have to get it off properly, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEngelen was Nicole Kidman\u2019s makeup artist when she famously donned a three-piece prosthetic nose for her Oscar-winning performance in Stephen Daldry\u2019s The Hours<\/em> (2002) and a makeup designer and hair designer on Anthony Minghella\u2019s Cold Mountain<\/em> (2003), which featured an Oscar-winning turn by Ren\u00e9e Zellweger.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also came up with the third nipple for the evil Scaramanga<\/a> (Christopher Lee) in The Man With the Golden Gun<\/em> and the red and black visage for the villainous Darth Maul in George Lucas\u2019 Star Wars: Episode I \u2014 The Phantom Menace<\/em> (1999).<\/p>\n

\n\tEngelen earned six Emmy nominations for toiling on the first three seasons of HBO\u2019s epic Game of Thrones<\/em>, winning in 2012 and \u201913.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe youngest of four kids, Paul Engelen was born on Oct. 30, 1949, in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. He enrolled at Twickenham Art College at age 17 and met makeup artist Tom Smith, who hired him as an assistant on Carol Reed\u2019s Oliver!<\/em> (1968), Clive Donner\u2019s Alfred the Great<\/em> (1969) and Roman Polanski\u2019s Macbeth<\/em> (1971).<\/p>\n

\n\tHe would do 11 films with Moore and spend a whopping 45 weeks on the Warren Beatty-directed Reds<\/em> (1981).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOutside of Tim Burton\u2019s Batman<\/em> (1989), Engelen\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 included Milos Forman\u2019s Ragtime<\/em> (1981), Alan Parker\u2019s Pink Floyd \u2014 The Wall<\/em> (1982), Frank Oz\u2019s Little Shop of Horrors<\/em> (1986), Kevin Reynolds\u2019 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves<\/em> (1991), Renny Harlin\u2019s Cutthroat Island<\/em> (1995), Phillip Noyce\u2019s The Saint<\/em> (1997), Jean-Jacques Annaud\u2019s Seven Years in Tibet<\/em> (1997), Simon West\u2019s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider<\/em> (2001), Wolfgang Petersen\u2019s Troy<\/em> (2004), Brett Ratner\u2019s Hercules<\/em> (2014), Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s Phantom Thread<\/em> (2017) and much more.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to Lawson Johnston \u2014 his credits include the upcoming Gladiator II<\/em> and many projects with his father-in-law and mentor \u2014 Engelen\u2019s survivors include his wife, Lizzie, whom he first met in kindergarten; his daughters, Sam and Georgie; and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n
