\n A Denver cop was fired for posting \u201clet\u2019s start a riot\u201d on social media<\/a> ahead of a night of George Floyd protests, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Officer Thomas McClay shared the message Sunday to Instagram along with a photo of himself and two other officers in riot gear, news<\/a> outlet 9News reported.<\/p>\n

Police launched an investigation after the image surfaced and terminated him, just one day later, for violating social media policy, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

The two other officers seen in the since-deleted image remain with the force and are not under probe, the report said.<\/p>\n

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock wrote on Twitter that he backed the police\u2019s decision and said he regrets the incident \u201coccurred at a moment in time when we must all bring out the very best of ourselves to meet the challenges before us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Denver Police Protective Association slammed McClay\u2019s photo Tuesday night in a statement as \u201cinflammatory, insensitive, and quite frankly, misguided,\u201d news station KMGH reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is time to end utilizing social media as a tool to divide,\u201d the union said. \u201cIt is time to sit down and talk face to face.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
