On stage, a five-piece band \u2014 a drummer, bassist, keyboardist, saxophonist, and guitarist frontman dressed in all black \u2014 are playing their biggest song, \u201cSeasons,\u201d a grand and melancholic jazz-rock ballad about pining. When the hook comes in, \u201cBut I&#8217;ll pray for you all the time \/ If I could be by your side \/ I&#8217;ll give you all my life, my seasons,\u201d the room erupts in a thousands-strong singalong. Near me, a girl is crying and screaming and singing at the same time though she\u2019s still clutching her phone straight up like an antenna. It, and the thousands around it, never comes down the rest of the show. \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265501\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265483\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            This is the kind of fervent devotion <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wave_to_earth\/\">wave to earth<\/a>, perhaps South Korea\u2019s biggest indie rock band at the moment, inspires. Since 2023, the Seoul-based trio \u2014 consisting of frontman and guitarist Daniel Kim, bassist John Cha, and drummer Dong Kyu Shin \u2014 have sold out two separate U.S. tours \u2014 a rarity for K-pop groups, much less K-indie rock outfits. Tonight\u2019s show is the penultimate stop of their latest 30-date trek that saw them playing rooms just one tier size below arenas. But the data can\u2019t capture the pure intensity of their fandom, which I witness firsthand as I watch hordes of young women (and guys) scream and cry for an hour straight.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265495\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left embed\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[\uc628\uc2a4\ud14c\uc774\uc9c02.0] wave to earth - seasons\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nZqwQCLYgjk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265502\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265484\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            A few days after the show, I meet up with the band at a Midtown espresso bar where they arrive late, apologizing profusely, because they accidentally went to a different coffee shop instead. They\u2019re coordinated in black, and their demeanors are quiet and subdued. Kim, in a low-brimmed dad cap obscuring a sharp jawline and Comme Des Gar\u00e7on cardigan, slides himself into the corner of a booth, followed by Cha, whose face is alert and inviting; Shin is the most flashy of the three; nearly every finger on his hands bears a shiny big ring.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            It wouldn\u2019t be totally inaccurate to say that wave to earth have become the somewhat unofficial ambassadors of the rapidly growing South Korean indie rock scene. Since breaking out in 2020 with \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nZqwQCLYgjk\">Seasons<\/a>,\u201d which soundtracked <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/wave-to-earth-season\">over a million videos on TikTok<\/a>, their career has gone turbo mode, sending them on back-to-back treks throughout Europe and the U.S.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cOur music is famous, but we are not famous, personally,\u201d Kim says, modestly.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Cha adds, \u201c[Our fans] don&#8217;t recognize us that much. It&#8217;s more like, \u2018Oh, this music is yours,\u2019 but they\u2019re kind of surprised [when they see us]. I like it that way.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Still, with each <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>, the band has courted new rounds of interviews and interested industry meetings. But most of the press <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/08\/17\/wave-to-earth-members-music-profile-interview-tour\/70249500007\/\">that\u2019s<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2024\/10\/23\/wave-to-earth-members-music-interview-tour\/75557540007\/\">been<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/features\/wave-to-earth-asia-tour-interview-the-first-era-flaws-and-all-3594682\">published<\/a> has elided the sheer force of their rise. Kim, who\u2019d grown up inheriting his older brother\u2019s electric guitar, was looking for a venue to play music and quickly eyed the lanky limbed drummer as a potential partner. Though they didn\u2019t end up joining the church group (\u201c[The church] was kind of conservative, and said, \u201cYou shouldn&#8217;t do outside world&#8217;s music.\u2019 I got sick of it,\u201d Kim says), Kim and Shin did make good on their promise to jam together and started a few projects. Eventually they went their separate ways. \u201cI made a promise with Dong Kyu to join again [in another group] someday,\u201d Kim says.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            That someday arrived in 2018, after the two had graduated from an arts high school in Seoul and started meeting up again to play music together. Still a two-piece at the time, Kim felt they needed a bassist to fill out their sound and reached out to Cha, who\u2019d also gone to art school with them and just returned from his mandatory two-year military service.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI said, why not?\u201d Cha recalls. But Cha credits Kim\u2019s sheer determination and belief in the music as the reason for the band\u2019s success, describing him as a \u201cvisionary.\u201d \u201cWhen he made me listen to his first demo of wave to earth,\u201d Cha says, \u201cHe was already visualizing, this is gonna be big.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Kim, whom Cha describes as a \u201crocker guy,\u201d had already started multiple band projects by then (including one called The Poles which is still active and most recently released music in April), and had a life-long dream of making it big. From the beginning, the members say, Kim strategically positioned wave to earth with global aspirations.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265490\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            <span class=\"lead-text\">Guitar-led rock music from South Korea<\/span> has been steadily crossing over to the U.S. In recent years, bands like The Rose and Day6 have amassed millions-strong international followings and high-profile performance slots at festivals like Coachella. Still, wave to earth still sticks out as an anomaly within this movement.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            For starters, they sing largely in English \u2014 their most recent album, 2024\u2019s <i>play with earth! 0.03<\/i>, contains zero Korean \u2014 while the sound they\u2019re mining \u2014 peaceful, breezy tunes about love and enjoying the beauty of the earth \u2014 isn\u2019t exactly rockstar material.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Their first-ever release \u201cwave\u201d is a tidy example of the band\u2019s sonic philosophy: A sweet and surfy jam filled with twinkling synths, Kim croons about the waves in a lovers\u2019 eyes and how their \u201cwords are like a flowing star.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Per Kim, the motto of the band \u201cis love and being respectful to each other,\u201d which explains why motifs of nature, sunsets, and the soft, invisible forces that link us all together dominate their songs. Even gloomier thoughts and failed romances are draped with a rosy, romantic sheen as on \u201cholyland,\u201d a song that begins with Kim \u201cwalking along with grief\u201d but still taking the time to \u201clay in the grass, daydream in the sun.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265491\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Adding darker colors to their gentle optimism helps wave to earth escape the sanguine. Steffi L, a 28-year-old fan, found herself resonating with the \u201ccalm\u201d and \u201cuplifting\u201d music that refused to condescend. \u201cIt is a nice thing to have music that has that kind of positivity,\u201d she says. \u201cI don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s false positivity or toxic positivity either, because I feel like the lyrics do recognize that the world is a little bit ugly, but there is still light or things to love about it.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Online, the praise and adoration from fans is more effusive. Take a scroll through the band\u2019s comments on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@wavetoearthofficial\">TikTok<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wave_to_earth\/\">Instagram<\/a>: \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mygravity_96\/video\/7351892523893214496\">My comfort band<\/a>,\u201d \u201cI feel at peace when I listen to them,\u201d \u201ctheir music changed my life.\u201d The fervor and volume of these sentiments indicate that, whatever wave to earth are doing, they\u2019re the only ones who can do it.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The band members agree. In fact, Kim says he wrote their gargantuan single, \u201cSeasons\u201d \u2014 on which he tells a lover they can\u2019t be together but vows to follow them through \u201cthe seasons\u201d of their life \u2014 because he \u201chad the feeling that people need this song.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cWhen I wrote that song, right after, I [knew] this [would] be the biggest hit for the band,\u201d Kim says. How? He pauses to look at me in disbelief. \u201cBecause it\u2019s a really good song!\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265492\" Each person turns their instrument into an extension of their body during the impromptu jams before and after songs, where Kim shreds and Dong Kyu speed drums into oblivion.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Jess S., a 41-year-old fan from NYC, cites their performances as a rarity in the concert circuit today: \u201cAs a fan who lived through one of the golden ages of modern music in the \u201890s, like alt rock shoegaze, lo-fi college radio, and so on \u2014 wave to earth brings me back to a time when music felt more real and more accessible and im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te.\u201d Their audiences respond to their energy in kind, screaming to every lyric no matter if it\u2019s in English or Korean.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cEvery time,\u201d Kim says of their fans\u2019 participation. \u201cIt&#8217;s not easy to sing along in Korean.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s this combination \u2014 their songs\u2019 yearning <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s, impressive musicianship, and undeniable stage presence \u2014 that has propelled wave to earth to unseen heights for a band of their origins. After releasing music independently for years, they signed on with the South Korean record label Wavy in 2021 \u201cto handle more stuff to be big,\u201d Cha says.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think [they are] Korean no. 1 band! wave to earth is best band in Korea,\u201d their Wavy manager, who\u2019s been sitting next to me, suddenly chimes in. The band busts out laughing, shaking their heads, reluctant to agree. \u201cWe need to be humble,\u201d Kim jokes, adding air quotes around the word.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265496\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cWhen he made me listen to his first demo of wave to earth, he was already visualizing, this is gonna be big.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265494\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            <br \/>The band are \u201cthankful\u201d for the places their career has taken them, and are doing their best to adjust to their new reality. It brought major creative changes: a saxophonist and keyboardist have joined their latest tour dates, and Kim is challenging himself to think and write more fluently in English (previously, he\u2019d write lyrics in Korean and translate). During his downtime, he\u2019s listening almost exclusively to American music: Clairo, Ryan Beatty, and more.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            It\u2019s more in the personal arenas where the new friction has taken its toll. \u201cIt went so fast,\u201d Cha says of their rise. \u201cWe didn&#8217;t have much time to really spend out[side] of the music business as friends. We need more time to spend with each other, but these days we know that this chance is never [going to] be the same.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            There\u2019s no time for a break or vacation as they face a busy schedule that has them booked out through 2025.
