\n\tYellowjackets<\/em> writer Ashley Lyle revealed on Sunday that the cast of the Showtime series<\/a> often host \u201cfuneral parties\u201d for each other when characters die. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cKilling off a character means nothing but good story,\u201d Lyle said during an app<\/a>earance at this weekend\u2019s Vulture Fest<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s often really heartbreaking.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tYellowjackets<\/em>, which first premiered in 2021 and follows two parallel storylines of teenagers and their adult counterparts, has harbored its fair share of gruesome and emotional character deaths. Two seasons in, Travis (Andres Soto), Adam Martin (Peter Gadiot), Laura Lee (Jane Widdop), Jessica Roberts (Rekha Sharma), Jackie (Ella Purnell), Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman), Javi (Luciano Leroux), Kevyn Tan (Charlie Wright) and Natalie (Juliette Lewis) have all bid their final adieu. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think it\u2019s really lovely that the actors have started having funeral parties for each other,\u201d Lyle continued. \u201cI\u2019ve attended several. It\u2019s very sweet. They\u2019re very closely knit, particularly our younger cast.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLyle pointed to parties held for Leroux and Widdop as particularly memorable. <\/p>\n

\n\tYellowjackets<\/em>, currently in production on season three, made waves its last season for the particularly hard-to-watch cannibalism scene following the death of Jackie. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have a pretty tough stomach, and we\u2019ve done some weird things on the show, but I will say this season got me,\u201d Courtney Eaton, who plays young Lottie, told The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>at the time. \u201cI almost threw up on set one of the days we were eating Jackie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPerhaps in keeping with the paradox of a term like \u201cfuneral party,\u201d Lyle and her team of showrunners told THR<\/em> they wanted the cannibalism to \u201chave a sort of perversely celebratory feeling.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur young cast, who knew they were about to do something intense, was, in some ways, mimicking art because they were using humor to sort of process it. There was a lot of joking around,\u201d said Jonathan Lisco, who wrote the episode. \u201cThey called it Jackie-fruit. The whole thing was very bizarre. So there was this weird duality of reverence for what we were about to portray but also the sort of human need to make it funny in order to engage it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the Vulture Fest interview, Lyle shared a more lighthearted story about casting Joel McHale<\/a>, who will join the show for season three. Lyle saw the actor at the Troubadour in Los Angeles did not believe it was him, recounting to the crowd, \u201cThat man is not as old as Joel McHale, because he looks incredible.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tEventually, Lyle said she tracked down the man, and asked him if he was really Joel McHale. \u201cNo, I\u2019m just the world\u2019s best paid Joel McHale impersonator,\u201d McHale said. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe interaction ended up turning into McHale\u2019s joining the show. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt turns out he\u2019s a fan of the show, and then he bought us all our merch, which was delightful,\u201d Lyle said. When the team reached out with an offer, he responded \u201cI thought you were just drunk and kidding.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLyle couldn\u2019t reveal any further details about who McHale will play in season three, which does not yet have a release date. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
